Well, he’s certainly not Batman.
WTF? I’ll gladly admit to analyzing posts and trying to make sure both sides of an argument understand each other. But why the heck would I do what’s going on in that thread? The guy isn’t trying to diffuse the situation. He’s trying to argue that he is right, failing miserably, and not bailing. If we had to pick a poster he was like, it would be Dio.
Yeah, I’ll never live that one Warning thread down, but I’ve been doing my best never post like that again. At the very least I will leave a thread when it seems no one agrees with me–if I haven’t already left because I was just posting my opinion and really don’t give a crap.
What happens if you’ve explored a lot about something and still find it boring?
And why is it any skin off your back if I don’t like your interest?
And moreover, why does anyone else care if iamnotbatman doesn’t approve of their interests? He can tell me all he wants that he thinks I am ignorant for not likinv X, doesn’t make him right or me wrong. It just makes him a little snotty. And snotty I’ve dealt with.
that’s impossible, Robin.
Or I could, you know, listen to music that I like. It’s not like I have very limited choices in that category.
Or a vanilla porno called Citizen Came? (Maybe set in Roman times!)
Then I apologize. It’s a concept that is foreign to my own experience, so I find it difficult to accept. I tend to wonder why you find it boring. Some people in that thread, for example, said that they found it boring because “it is written in a foreign language.” These sorts of statements tend to confirm my general opinion on the matter.
Heh heh - “canonbear.” That’s tickling my funny bone.
Okay, you can’t have it both ways - you were perfectly decent, or you were a musician - which was it?
I don’t think we can assume that - we don’t know what Batman’s message board style would be.
Because not everyone has the same taste. I go with my husband to watch Shakespeare in the Park every summer, and I kinda enjoy it, but I don’t love it. He really enjoys it. I’ve read any number of Shakespeare’s plays; he’s got a degree in English; I read all the time, he reads on the john. We’re different people; it’s okay for us to like different things.
Now, if someone has no experience with something and still makes a value judgement on it, that’s a whole nother thing. You can say you’re not interested in Shakespeare, and that’s fine, but you really can’t say it’s boring if you’ve never experienced it.
I don’t even think that’s true.
If you’ve had experience with things similar to the thing you are passing judgment on, it’s not necessary to have direct experience with the thing you’re judging before rendering judgment.
I don’t need to listen to Kid Cudi to believe that his music is shit if I’ve heard acts like him.
**Cat Whisperer **- But why do you think that your husband, who has a degree in English, enjoys it more than you do? I’m not saying he is “smarter” or “better” than you, lest you get that impression.
I think this guy put it well, in the other thread:
I agree with him, that there is probably some confusion here regarding the distinction between “something is boring” and “x bores me,” and what is meant by it.
I suppose that’s true, to a certain extent. You could say, “I’m not interested in current music.” You can’t really say something’s good or bad without experiencing it, though; for example, I like Kid Cudi’s “Day and Night” just fine.
so now you’re a pedant as well as a pseudo intellect?
I’ve had enough English classes to think that most English professors are idiots. My husband has had enough to be sure of it.
That’s right: I’m a pedant, a moron, a retard, a pseudo-intellectual, and a douche-bag. Did I miss something?
you’re also not batman.
Anything else? My annual self-evaluation is coming up!
When you hear someone say that something is boring, do you take that to mean that it is boring for every single person on earth and therefore it is boring for you as well? Or do you take it to mean that the person saying it finds that particular “thing” to be boring?
Does it insult you in some way if I say something is boring, rather than say it bores me specifically?
No hyphen in douchebag.
