iCarly

You don’t think she’s a little… butch? I’m not sure Hollywood is ready for more than one Ellen.

She is trying to become a country singer (according to her videos on youtube), so if she is (I don’t think she is) gay she probably won’t come out for a while.

My daughter likes it, but I think it’s pretty awful, really. I’ve just got accustomed to it enough that I don’t have to leave the room when it’s on.

If you want a really funny, intelligent kids’ programme, try Ned’s Declassified Survival Guide.

scifisam2009, I notice your spelling of “programme”. Would you happen to be British? If so, that may help explain your distaste of the show. British and American humor are two very different animals. I enjoy Monty Python and a few other British items and have heard Brits likewise don’t care for much American humor.

I’m American and I can’t stand it. My sister is constantly watching it, though.

I am, but I don’t think it’s got anything to do with that. I like a lot of American shows, and the one I just name-checked there is American. I don’t have any distaste for the show, I just don’t think it’s very good, though it is growing on me (like the janitor’s mole :D).

There are LOADS of successful American sitcoms in Britain - wherever you heard that, it’s not true. There are a couple/few that were huge in the US but not so big here (Seinfeld, especially) but there are dozens more that are hugely popular.

I can’t stand that kid. I thought I was the only one. The show makes me cringe because I think she overacts. Annoying.

I half paid attention to a couple of episodes when I was at my sister’s house a while ago. My niece loves the show. It seemed like a typical sit-com to me but I’ll pay more attention next time.

I am a 37 year old father and I watch it even when my daughters aren’t around. I thought I was one of the only ones.

They all overact horrendously, but I think some people kinda like that - different strokes. (Which also had a fair bit of overacting. :D)

You may have seen McCurdy playing Sam’s very nice twin sister, Melanie. From what I glean from the net, the “Melanie” character is basically McCurdy’s real personality. Sam is a character she plays - pity, I like Sam.

I love the show - and my kids are grown.

It’s a classic 3-camera sit-com - started with I Love Lucy through Mary Tyler Moore, etc. and now The Big Bang Theory - Dan Schneider saw that a lot of grown-up TV was moving towards reality shows and other non-sit-coms, and saw that a lot of kids watched re-runs of sitcoms when they got home from school, so he identified and filled a need…

His shows like Drake and Josh and iCarly deliver simple, easy sit-commy goodness. I don’t seek them out - I also stopped watching reruns of Bewitched and Gilligan’s Island when I was younger, too - but my kids watch 'em all the time and I don’t require the channel to be changed…

Miranda Cosgrove was also Summer the Manager in School of Rock. She has solid sitcom acting chops; I just wish they didn’t try to get her to sing. Oy. When she grows up, she will looks like she may be a beautiful woman - could end up actually making the transition to a grown-up acting career…

Love the show. It breaks my heart to think of McCurdy or Cosgrove turning into a Brittney Spears freakshow.

Camille Paglia’s description of McCurdy, comparing her to Carol Burnett = dead-on balls accurate. Specifically Burnett’s Eunice character. She’s got a lot of her facial expressions and even the evil glare (although not as campy as Burnett’s). Sam’s mom sounds a lot like Burnett’s real mom.

I could see Cosgrove developing into another Naomi Watts with very little effort. McCurdy is going to have to decide soon if she wants to stay in sitcoms (which she would clearly excel in) or if she wants to get serious about acting. She’d be good in either but I don’t see her being able to do both–she’s too memorable. Of course, as has been stated, the iCarly acting is a bit overdone, but I think that’s more to do with directing. The kids do get a chance to show some versatility from time to time.

Nobody ever talks about Freddy. Why is that?

I never heard of it before this thread.

I don’t have t.v. but I do watch a lot of programs on-line. I’ll see if I can find it at one of my trusty sites.

Does anyone know if it’s available on Netflix instant watch?

Youtube will have some examples for sure.

Freddy isn’t a very likable character IMHO. Carly and Sam need him because he has technical skills and lives in the same building but they wouldn’t if not for that although Sam did hook up with him before. He seems overly arrogant for a high school dweeb too but that seems like it comes from the actor rather than the character. I am more of a Gibby (chubby kid always taking his shirt off) fan myself although but I admire Neville’s evil schemes. Neville is obsessed with Carly but that kid can flame in a way that is rare for someone his age.

Is Neville that evil kid that keeps messing with Spencer? He pisses me off.

No, Neville is the one that is after Cary’s show.

I agree with you on the one that messes with Spencer. He is annoying.

Hmmm, I looked him up on IMDB, I don’t recognize him, but he’s only been in 6 episodes.

Neville is the horribly spoiled evil genius that messes with everyone. He is a competitor to iCarly in the web show world and has found ways to take over her website before. I have read that he is the most stereotypical 45 year old gay man on TV although he is only 17. He claims to want to want Carly’s affection though and her team always comes up with ways to defeat him.

This stuff is basically a classic sitcom crossed with a comic book for overworked Gen-X parents. That is why we encourage our kids to watch it and follow it ourselves.

It seems like there were more episodes but maybe they were just really powerful ones that made an impact like ‘Who shot JR’ or the Blossom very special episodes.
