Ice cream eating habit

For some reason I will occasionally go on an ice cream eating run where I want a serving almost every night. This might go for 6 months to a year. Then for the next 10 years I will barely eat it. I think in my lifetime I have had about 5 of these runs. I will start craving it right after dinner and it never disappoints me until one day it no longer tastes good, it is always sudden like that. Is that typical for a rich sweet dessert?

Do you sometimes crave other sweets or just ice cream? Sounds to me like some kind of sugar addiction, but for you it only lasts a few days and then for some reason it subsides.

A bit longer, from what the OP said:

Sorry, I misread the OP. If it lasts for 6 -12 months I still think it’s a sugar addition, unless you are eating sugar-free ice cream, which I assume you aren’t. Why it would suddenly stop for a while is hard to say. Perhaps you just got tired of eating ice cream or maybe you realized it’s not a particularly healthy habit and consciously chose to stop doing it. Just ice cream and not other sweets.

I get food fetishes.
Because of my restricted diet if I find something I can eat and I find it good I can’t get enough.
Of course, it’s never been sweets.

But, I understand the addictive properties of sugar.
If you do things that give you munchies that can explain it.

Have your glucose levels checked. During the craving period. And then when it passes.
Does your weight change during these times?

At a guess, it’s a learned food aversion. We’re hard-wired that, when we get sick, we develop a revulsion for something that we ate shortly before we got sick, as a means of learning to avoid poisons. Usually it works pretty well, but occasionally you get sick for some completely unrelated reason, and some innocent bystander food gets the blame. After ten years, the aversion wears off, and you realize again that, yeah, ice cream actually does taste pretty good.

Well…I got a really, really important question, which we need to know the answer to, before we can tell ya 'bout your cravings:
What flavor ice cream do you eat every day for a year, bro?

Now, I likes me a lotta ice cream.Chocolate with crunchy nuts mostly. Or sometimes a good rich vanilla with cherries …But I ain’t never ate it every day for a whole year, and then not again for 10 years.

I ain’t no doctor. And I ain’t no expert on diabetes, etc. But it seems like there might be something worth checking out with blood tests, or somethin’.

Me too. And like the OP they generally last several months before whatever the relevant brain chemistry reaction eases up. Sometimes they do a lot of damage so I’m paying attention to what we’re learning about the effect of certain drugs on eating behaviors.

I don’t mind the idea that people should use drugs to modulate their behavior but I don’t like the idea that I should. Nearly seventy years of data is slowly wearing down my resistance.

There might be something to this. My last box of ice cream was very sweet moose tracks. And I was a little queasy for a couple of days there. I didn’t connect it to the ice cream. Before that I was eating vanilla with some choc syrup on it. The vanilla sounds very bland to me now after eating the moose tracks but my body doesn’t handle the moose tracks so I suddenly just lost interest.

I don’t eat large servings or more than once a day. But I do tend to drop weight when I am on a sweet kick because I eat less of other foods. I tend to use cold cereal or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches as a desert. When I am on a sweet kick I don’t eat those other things which are also sweet.

My gf is in the midst of this. For the last three weeks we had vanilla ice cream in the freezer. I haven’t had any, mostly because she seems to really want it right now. It’s weird.

I hate all you people and your ability to have so much Icecream.

Not a food, but I have the same pattern with playing Dungeons & Dragons (or other tabletop RPGs): I’ll play every week for a year and then go multiple years without playing at all.

Heck, I’ve been eating a small serving of cake for breakfast for over 40 years now.

Accompanied by grapefruit juice?

A reference to a classic comedy routine by Bill Cosby. He’s a terrible person, but he did some outstanding comedy.

No, grapefruit juice-no.
I don’t know that reference, I’d be more likely to get a Cheech and Ching reference.

Spoilered, as I still have mixed feelings about sharing Cosby’s work:

I was on an ice cream kick for a while too! I like ice cream but it’s not my favorite thing in the world. I can usually take it or leave it. About a month ago, while grocery shopping, I walked past the ice cream freezers and something drew me in! Plain old chocolate ice cream is my favorite followed by vanilla with Hershey’s hot fudge (has to be Hershey’s). Sometimes I add raspberries. Anyway, I came across a pint container of Bettergoods Premium chocolate ice cream. That went in the cart along with larger containers of Turkey Hill vanilla and Hudsonville Deer Traxx. First of all the Bettergoods chocolate ice cream is AMAZING. To me, it tastes like Culver’s custard (which is my favorite). Bettergoods is a Walmart brand. I had never heard of Hudsonville ice cream, it’s made in Holland, MI. The Deer Traxx was also amazing - vanilla ice cream with peanut butter cups and chunks of really good fudge. So for about a month, I had a dish of ice cream every evening after supper. Never more than that or at any other time of day. Now I’m satisfied. I’ll probably buy some more of the Bettergoods chocolate to have on hand, but that will be it. I’m not craving any other sweet treat. I’m pretty sure my sugar levels are fine. It was just a kick!
