Ice cream floats

No eggs, either, I understand.

Probably just as well, of course, but still, WTF?

Barq’s root beer and natural vanilla ice cream.

Black cherry soda and vanilla ice cream.

I really like vanilla ice cream. Natural vanilla, not French vanilla.

I thought a Boston Cooler was half of a cantaloupe with a scoop of orange sherbet in the center? Well, live and learn.

Best ice cream float? Cream soda( a clear one) with butter pecan ice cream. Gone are the days of the best cream soda here in Philly, Franks. Their advertising slogan(not that they needed one) was: “Is it Franks? Thanks!”

I like a blended coke float. Basically a milkshake made with Coke.

Most mom and pop dairy bars made them. Sonic used to sell them.

Can’t find any place that sells them now.

I make them at home with a hand mixer. Softened Vanilla ice cream, coke, a dash of milk. Mix very slowly. Pour into glasses.

One of my fondness memories as a kid was puling up to the local A&W and getting a ROOT BEER FLOAT.
Thanks to the OP for bringing this back.

Thank you. You nailed it.

Although all of you who have given me some ideas on variations. Upon which will be tried and tested.

You’ve done something wrong. With good ice cream and good root beer, combined at proper temperatures, there is a two-way reaction that brings out even more goodness from both. Some of root beer frosts onto the ice cream. Some of the ice cream melts into the root beer. Somehow it’s all rootier and beanier and creamier than ever.

Root beer and French vanilla. The classic - none better.

I’ve tried this and it’s tasty, but I still prefer root beer floats.

Is it technically still a float if it’s chocolate milk and vanilla ice cream?

Yes, this is very good, and I don’t even like Mountain Dew all that much.

Cherry Coke and chocolate ice cream- yum!

After reading this thread, there are some combinations I am eager to try.

Lemon sherbet and Sundrop
Vanilla or chocolate ice cream and Cheerwine
Vanilla ice cream and Mango Fanta

The banana/caramel combo mentioned above sounds awesome to me but I need to work out how to accomplish it.

I’d suggest using bananas and caramel.

I’d say No. The liquid needs to be carbonated.

I like coffee with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

My favorite is the classic Chocolate Coke Float. Plain chocolate ice cream (no chips, nuts, crumbs, etc.) in regular Coke. But you folks have given me some interesting ideas. I see a trip to Piggly Wiggly in my future. Near future.

I’d have to agree. That grapefruit beer I mentioned way up thread has (or seems to have) a touch of carbonation to give it sparkle. Yum!

I totally want to try making an ice cream float with this kind of soda, now.

Wow! Since 1374.

What I want to know is, what’s the proper way to make a root beer float? Is it ice cream first and then root beer (and then wait for the foam to shrink, and then pour more root beer in, and repeat the process), or root beer and then scoops of ice cream (and the resulting mess when the root beer splashes out of the glass)?

And is there a preferred root beer to ice cream ratio?

So, after y’all inspired the idea, I immediately went to the store and bought some vanilla ice cream and butterscotch beer and made a butterscotch beer float. Would definitely recommend; I’d say this at least equals a traditional root beer float, and may even be better.
