Ice cream floats

What I want to know is, what’s the proper way to make a root beer float? Is it ice cream first and then root beer (and then wait for the foam to shrink, and then pour more root beer in, and repeat the process), or root beer and then scoops of ice cream (and the resulting mess when the root beer splashes out of the glass)?

And is there a preferred root beer to ice cream ratio?

I usually fill the glass half full of root beer, then add ice cream. Note: a margarita glass is the perfect vehicle for a RBF.
