ID an episode of a suspense anthology series

I saw this on late night TV in the late '80s or very early '90s. This was before I got cable, so it was on a network or local broadcast station. I’ve looked through episode guides for all the anthology shows I know of – Tales From the Darkside, Freddy’s Nightmares, Tales of the Unexpected, Darkroom, Twilight Zone – but none of them sound familiar.

A woman has been recuperating in a mental hospital from a nervous breakdown she suffered after a violent assault. Her husband visits, and takes her out for a drive. While riding through a quiet neighborhood, she reacts in terror at the sight of a man working in his garden. She has no doubt, this is the man who assaulted her.

Her husband brings her back to the hospital, then returns to the house. He watches the man for days, studies his habits, and when the opportunity arises, confronts and kills him.

Some time later, the husband is once again taking his wife for a drive, calmly assuring her that she’ll never have to be afraid of the man again. This time, they drive through a busier section of town – and the husband slowly registers his horror as his wife accuses every man she sees of being the one who assaulted her.

That’s the ending to an episode of ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS, from the '80s.

It’s also a remake of the pilot episode from the '50s incarnation.

It was also the Pilot of the reboot as it happens. I remembered that episode as well. FWIW In my memory the husband gets out of the car, chases the guy down right then and there and kills him and then gets back in to tell hsi wife it’s over now only to have her accuse everyone else that walks by (same story as you remembered but a compressed timeline).

Both the 1955 and 1985 episodes were titled “Revenge.” The later version starred Linda Purl (then better known for playing Matlock’s daughter) as the victimized wife.

Quite the episode!

And one to heed should one ever consider a personal revenge in real life.

I didn’t remember there being an '80s revival of AHP. I’ll look it up. Thanks!

Four seasons.

NOT available on DVD, as far as I can tell.

It premiered the same season as The New Twilight Zone and Amazing Stories. Quite a year for Anthology fans (like me :))

I think you mean “better known for playing Fonzie’s one long term girlfriend”.
