never & ever
fat & flat
Begun and done?
Happy and crappy? (in terms of feeling, anyway - “I feel happy” versus “I feel crappy.”)
or and nor
either and neither
starboard and larboard
Blatant and latent.
Covert and overt. (Although these two might derive from the same root.)
Well, that’s the pair I was going to use…
Neither of these pairs is a rhyme. For a proper rhyme, the words need to match from the last accented vowel all the way to the end of the word. So, for instance, “antonym” is accented on the “ant”, so the rhyme would be something like “santonym”. And “female” rhymes with “e-mail”, but not “male”.
There are many types of rhymes. None of them are ‘proper’.
adore/abhore
Those aren’t antonyms if you’re Paris Hilton.
Some others, perhaps more tenuous than many already posted: big/twig, gain/drain, fight/flight.
Here’s a pair that not only rhyme, but sound exactly the same:
Raise and **Raze **
eviscerate and commiserate (yeah, I’m reaching)
But many of them are called “perfect.”
Pish-tush! Copper is a “proper” rhyme.
Brag/nag?
scrawny and brawny
Glad and mad
Bad and rad?
Compliance and defiance
