Somewhere in my brain is a “joke” I heard or read in childhood. It’s not very funny, really, so I hesitate to call it a joke even, but it stuck somehow and it bugs me that I can’t place it. I think it might have been in a comic strip, or maybe an old-school comedy record album. Googling hasn’t helped.
Here goes…
Guy #1: Where’s Wong?
Guy #2: Wong went away.
Guy #1: When will Wong weturn-- I mean return?
that’s it… not much to go on, I know. Anyone?
There were jokes about calling Mr. Wing and Mr. Wong in Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, maybe that was one of them. The one I remember is the president trying to call Mr. Wing in China and repeatedly getting Mr. Wong; somebody tells him the problem is that there are so many Wings and Wongs in China that “every time you Wing you get the Wong number.”
Can’t really help, but here’s a classic web cartoon with wings and wongs in it, as it were.
Isn’t that nice? We’re in Wang’s wing. (Murder by Death.)
