ID this Movie - Flying Whales, an Egg and last man on earth

ok, here’s what i remember:

it is from early 80’s and is a mix of segments of ‘real’ action and animation

the ‘real’ stuff is a story of after the apocalypse, a guy wearing breathing gear searches through a world full of rubble for oxygen cannisters.

the animation is a dark city with whalers hunting flying whales.
the main part however is a young character who has a ‘magical’ egg and is trying to protect it.

at the end the two overlap and the egg ends up with the ‘last man’ and it gives out oxygen = everything now ok.

i’ve tried googling but all it gives is hits for fantasia2000 which apparently has a flying whale in it?

I took the liberty of posting your question on the IMDB board, and someone immediately recognized it as Tenshi no Tamago, aka “Angel’s Egg.”

back again…
checked out imdb, it looks like the version i saw was the hated basterdised ‘in the aftermath’ which used parts of the animated movie in with tthat real world footage
