I remember at some point in my childhood (I was born in 1978) there was a thing on TV where kids could call in, and had the opportunity to use their phone to play the game “Space Invaders.” Their game (it was limited to be only like 30 seconds long) was broadcast live. I remember that, for some reason, the kids playing always made little “shooting” noises as they fired at the aliens in the game. (“Pow, pow!” or whatever.)
I feel like I remember that I thought it was strange that they should be playing Space Invaders, as though the game was old already when I was seeing this happen on TV. But I’m not confident that I am remembering this impression accurately.
Is this ringing a bell with anyone? Everyone else I know thinks I’m crazy.
What you’re talking about sounds a lot like either “Super Clubhouse Pow” or “Secret Clubhouse Pow!” (I can’t remember which) that was on one of the Appleton/Green Bay area stations. Don’t ask me which one, I was pretty young at that point.
I suppose it would’ve been on in other cities too, but I’ve never met anyone else that has seen it.
When I tell other people about it they think I’m crazy too.
I remember PIX! Even despite having grown up in central Pennsylvania. Our cable company carried WPIX and every day when we got home from school, we’d watch Tom and Jerry, The Magic Garden and PIX.
Of course, every single segment they aired ended up as one solid repetition of PIXPIXPIXPIXPIXPIXPIXPIXPIXPIXPIXPIXPIX…
buckgully You are not crazy, or at least if you are we both are, because I definitely remember the “pow!” show on a Green Bay area TV station. I seem to rememeber a pearish shaped cartoon clown.
Google Fu wins! It was Barney’s Clubhouse Pow on TV 11
According to Intellivision Productions, this was a syndicated franchise called “TV POWWW.” An Intellivision system with a special cartridge (later released as Sharp Shot by Mattel) was utilized. There were four games programmed (although I don’t know if all were used on television)- space shooting (not a true Space Invaders clone), football, monster-shooting, and ship bombing. To play on the air, kids would say the word “POWWW” over the phone (except on New York’s WPIX, where they would say “PIX!”).
