Idea! Re Speeding Things Up

In the FAC, I noticed it was stated that one reason for the slowness of the SDMB was searches. Even if only a few people are on the board, if too many searches are going on, or if the searches going on are too major, the board will be slow.

How about instituting some “no search” time periods? The SDMB would presumably be fast during those periods. So long as the “no search” periods were fairly short, speed during the rest of the day would, it is to be hoped, not be much worse then usual.

This is not a thing you can easily customize either.

While we’re on the topic of searches, do you have any idea why “search all open forums” has returned to the search options list? If I remember correctly, it was removed awhile back to help reduce the scope of searches and speed up the board. Perhaps this extra option is partly responsible for the recent board slowdown…

“Search all open forums” returned after the upgrade. We haven’t bothered to remove that option since the upgrade. But now we are looking at the search options (other posters like White Lightning have remarked on that recently) and we will consider this issue also.
