My cousin bought this at an auction in Southern Illinois. She assumes it is Native American, but some have suggested African origin. There are some pictures (not great quality I’m afraid) here:

It is about 24 inches across at the top. The bottom is partially collapsed.

Assuming anyone is still interested, I probably should have described it as rawhide, rather than leather.
I think it’s one of the first attempts at a meat hat. It looks like this one was supposed to be a bowler.
I can honestly say I’ve never seen anything African like that.
