Identify the Italian food from this mispronounciation

Walking past a house last night, I smelled this incredible aroma of Italian food, something rustic with more than a hint of garlic. They were on their front porch when I went back, so I complimented them on the smell and asked what it was. They said that it was “blue morelli”, “blue manetti”, or something like that. They had roasted garlic with it. Beyond that, I didn’t get much about it.

I asked where they got it, and they said that it was in bulk at a local independent grocery. I haven’t been there yet, but the food expert I asked at Central Market had no idea what it was and couldn’t find anything either. Google shows that there’s a beer with that name, nothingelse. Can anyone figure out what this stuff is?

Outside of Gorgonzola cheese, I don’t know of any Italian food that’s blue.

Inside of Gorgonzola cheese, it’s too dark to…oh never mind.

Of course, it’ might not be “blue” anything, but part of an Italian dish’s name, like “blumanetti” or something like that. Unfortunately, I can’t think of anything that fits.

They were saying “Bloomin’ Onion.” They must have gotten some take-out from Outback Steakhouse.

Maybe it was Buccatini All’Amatriciana (Boo-ca-tini Al-la-ma-trishi-an-na)?

Bucatini is a type of hollow spaghetti…

Here in Chicago, we have Lou Malnati’s…but I don’t think you’d find it in a grocery store!

lu-mah-chay?

You know, bucatini is the closest thing that I’ve heard yet. Wikipedia says, " It is served with buttery sauces, pancetta or guanciale, vegetables, cheese, eggs, and anchovy or sardines", and the smell was more like a butter or cheese sauce.

I may go to Sun Harvest tomorrow and see if they have it in bulk. Of course, if they were just saying the name for the type of pasta, then I really should ask for the recipe. The stuff smelled that good…
