Identify this book from my incredibly vague description

A book I read a few years ago just popped into my head, and I’d like to figure out what it is but heck if I can remember much about it at all.

Here’s what I got:

  • it may have been the second in a series, and I think there was going to be another book after the one I’m talking about. That’s sort of why I’m trying to track it down; I remember liking it, and if there’s another I’d like to find it.

  • It was a post-apocalypse kind of thing, but not dark. It wasn’t The Road, for example.

  • It also had a wild west feel to it. Like, I sort of remember cavalry. Maybe. And guns, I think.

  • Geographically, it was set in the US. I think towards the end of the book there was a big battle somewhere in the North East, probably Canada.

  • The protagonist was a guy, and I think he raised himself up from being poor to being somewhat in power. I can’t recall if this was because he was bright, or he found some sort of ultra-powerful weapon or artifact.

  • he had a good friend/sidekick. I want to say a friend from his home village, or school, or something like that

  • there was a love interest. I think she started out with him, then got caught up with a bad guy.

  • There was a Bad Guy/Antagonist type. I think he liked the love interest.

  • The more I describe this book, the more it sounds like a stereotype and bad, so I’m not sure why I liked it so much. Or, why it is that I can’t remember the name or the author, seeing as I liked it so much.

  • As mentioned above, the book ends with some huge battle in the east. I seem to remember the protagonist and/or his friend helping to win that battle either through use of some sort of bit robot scary tank things or they had to figure out how to win versus big robot scary tank things.

  • The cover was brightly colored

  • It was new in the past 3-8 years or so.

  • It was fairly popular

That’s all I got, and I’m pretty sure at least some of what I recall is incorrect or not quite right. I wait to be dazzled in the next 3 minutes by someone telling me not only the name, but the timeframe in which I read it, and what color shirt I was wearing while reading page 245.

Are you sure it was released in the last 3-8 years? It wasn’t a re-issue of an older book?
A Canticle for Liebowitz has most or all of the elements you describe.
You read it before going to bed but not every night, and you were wearing a white tank top with pizza crumbs stuck on it

Nope, not it, and I don’t even own a white tank top.

Dies the Fire, or some other part of the Emberverse series? The books they used as the basis of Revolution (kind of)?

Julian Comstock, maybe?

That’s it! Thanks!

Though.. 40 minutes, we’re getting rusty…

First time I’ve ever gotten it, though, so that’s not nuthin.
