OK, here’s a question that has crossed my mind, oh…maybe 2700 times, but this is the first time it’s done so while I was was online and posting to SDMB.
When I was in, umm, well, nursery school, the teacher used to play a mixture of classical and pop music during our nap time. We were required to lay down and “nap”, but for those of us who didn’t fall asleep, there was always the music to tune into.
One of the pop songs stuck in my head. I tried the requisite google search on the lyrics, but the two phrases I can recall result in hundreds of irrelevant site hits:
“These are the things I get…for loving you,
These are the things I get…for being true”
(male vocalist)
Tune and chords:
first line = major key, melody following the contours of a rolling 3rd inversion major chord, e.g., if in C, g c e g’ e c g c e <change to d maj> d…
second line = starts off on 5th, major: g b d f d b g b d <change back to c maj> c
AHunter3, do either of these lyrics sound familiar?

This is what I get for loving you.
This is what I get for being true.
This is what I get, for taking all you put me through.
But I’d do it again, 'cause I’m still in love with you.
It’s been a long time, since I’ve seen you,
And I’m longing for your touch.
You left me, without a warning, yes you did,
You know I, need you so much, so much.
This is what I get for loving you.
This is what I get for being true.
This is what I get, for taking all you put me through.
But I’d do it again, 'cause I’m still in love with you.
Then he came along, and he took you, right by surprise.
Now I’m alone, and I got those teardrops in my eyes.
I told myself, this would happen, many times before.
Now I find myself, looking at the world, face down to the floor.
This is what I get for loving you.
This is what I get for being true.
This is what I get, for taking all you put me through.
But I’d do it gain, 'cause I’m still in love with you.
This is what I get for loving you.
This is what I get for being true.
This is what I get, for taking all you put me through.
But I’d do it again, 'cause I’m still in love with you, yeah.
Do it again, 'cause I’m still in love with you.
This is what I get for loving you,
This is what I get for being true.
This is what I get for loving you,
This is what I get for being true.
Or how about:

(Is it wrong is it wrong for loving you)
Is it wrong for loving you is it wrong for being true
Tell me darling tell me please is it wrong
Have I waited for so long has your love for me gone
Is it wrong is it wrong for loving you
Way down deep inside my heart you’re the only love sweetheart
Yes the only true love I ever knew
But I ask myself inside no need tellin’ myself lies
Is it wrong is it wrong for loving you

Is it wrong for loving you…
The former is a song called “This Is What I Get” off a debut album called “Rock City,” oddly enough, by a metal band called Riot, circa 1977. Unusual choice for pre-school. Perhaps this is a cover for the original 60’s tune?
The latter is a song called “Is It Wrong (for Loving You)” performed by Warner Mack, off an album called “The Bridge Washed Out” circa 1965. However, the actual song has a copyright date of 1961.
Thanks, but although the 38 year old memories from when I was a 4 year old are automatically suspect for a variety of reasons, I’m pretty sure of the exact phrase “these are the things I get” because with the literal-mindedness of a 4-year-old I was visualizing the singer holding out (to indicate “these”) a handful of “things”, the rewards he gets “for loving you”, and wondering what they were and why the song didn’t tell.
I don’t read music so I can’t really check this; but try Sinatra’s “The Things I Love” based on “Violin Concerto in D Major” by …uh…well… that damn Russian guy.
