Yeah, there’s always a song. It’s what I do. My nominee is Tracey Ulmann’s They Don’t Know. A classic doo-wop girl tune + a real-life doo-wop girl’s baby daddy + you don’t have to ask which Paul to know? Classic!
Pretty catchy. That guy in the video looks like a less cool Gunther.
I’m not sure if this is pop enough - George Michael’s “Waiting for that Day” George Michael " The Video Mix Waiting For That Day " By SANDRO LAMPIS.MP4 - YouTube.
Brian Wilson didn’t know everything, but he knew a good thing when he heard it, and apparently thought The Ronettes’ Be My Baby was pretty much the perfect pop song. I won’t say it’s not…
And Brian created a stereo masterpiece with one good ear! https://youtu.be/Eab_beh07HU
And if eyeliner could kill it would be even more perfect.
Most perfect pop song ever:
Strong contenders:
The Beatles - I Feel Fine
Big Star - September Gurls
Teenage Fanclub - Ain’t That Enough
Sugar - If I Can’t Change Your Mind
There’s more, much more, but I’m off to bed.
Gunther? Never mind. George Michael and “pop song” were created by God to be together.
“Hello, It’s Me” by Todd Rundgren is pop perfection.
So is “Vehicle” by Ides of March.
Pretty much anything off of Look Sharp by Joe Jackson, but I’ll offer Sunday Papers.
Huh? Was that in the right thread? Right forum? Right plane of existence? Or did you mean to post this in your world, where Nelson Mandela died while watching the ending of “Big” (where Sinbad played the giant floor piano with the Monocled Monopoly Man).
I dunno but i dig me some Lindsay Ellis.
David Bowie and Paul McCartney in the same thread. Where’s my fainting couch, I may swoon.
But, if you’re talking about pop songs you must include the King of Pop. The Jackson 5 when Wacko was a boy were very pop-ish.
I’ll go with Emitt Rhodes’s “With My Face on the Floor.” or “Fresh as a Daisy” or, really, anything else on the album.
I’d like to submit for your consideration Godley and Creme’s “Wedding Bells”
A few that I keep coming back to:
The 77s - Film at 11
Something Fierce (the 1980s-90s Minnesota band) - quite a few, but one of the only ones I could find online: My Hands Are Tied
Trip Shakespeare - again, quite a few; e.g. Bachelorette
Ooh, I agree with all of those. I’ve long said “September Gurls” is my typical “perfect pop song” example, but all those work for me, especially “Waterloo Sunset.”
How about “There She Goes” by The La’s?
Pete Townshend claimed S.O.S. was maybe the best pop song ever written.
Wow. A little Smokey Robinson influence, you think?
