I say uh-oh, because what does it mean if you like any of these songs? Here’s the list. Do you like any of these?
I love Afternoon Delight.
Disco Duck is a novelty song. It gave us a few chuckles. It is not in rotation anywhere afaik.
The Champs- 'Tequila’- I will listen to that anytime. Not a fave, however.
Yakety Yak is a classic.
All About That Bass is better by PMJ. Much better. (Post Modern Jukebox)
I dont think they listed "Close to you" by the Carpenters which is not only horrible but creepy.
I agree with 95% of those on the list.
No hate for We Didn’t Start the Fire? It is an abomination. Good list otherwise. Mostly repulsive stuff.
DiscoDuck was good!
Fly Robin Fly is the worst, hands down.
I got tired of scrolling and gave up about halfway through the list. I found it to be something of a mixed bag, though.
There were a number of songs that I like:
- The Proclaimers ‘I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)’
- Starland Vocal Band ‘Afternoon Delight’
- Europe ‘Final Countdown’
- Culture Club ‘Karma Chameleon’
Some I’m OK with and will sometimes listen to when they play on the radio:
- *The Police ‘De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da’ *
- The Four Seasons ‘Sherry’
- Baha Men ‘Who Let the Dogs Out’
- The Coasters ‘Yakety Yak’
Then there are some mildly annoying ones:
- Vanilla Ice ‘Ice Ice Baby’
- Los Del Rio ‘Macarena’
- The Strangeloves ‘I Want Candy’
- Wham! ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go’
And some true abominations:
- Billy Ray Cyrus ‘Achy Breaky Heart’
- Starship ‘We Built This City’
- Aqua ‘Barbie Girl’
Plus anything by Barry Manilow / Tom Jones / Justin Bieber. These are performers who very style i find annoying.
ETA: There were also a lot of songs that I am not familiar with (or at least didn’t recognize by the title.)
A lot of those songs are annoying but not the most annoying. Getting more play time than they rated makes them seem worse. Their are a few that are superlatively annoying and should never be heard again. The list does contain trash like Achy-Breaky Heart, but also easy listening type songs like Afternoon Delight which are only annoying when you hear them more than once a decade. But just putting one Bieber song on the list, or Barry Manilow’s only not annoying song really shows it to be a scattershot list of pop music which is generally annoying by nature.
I range from don’t mind to actively like a lot of those songs. What the hell is wrong with the Police song? One of my faves! However, that effing Crazy Frog version of “Axel F” has absolutely got to go.
ETA: Like below. I like MMMBop. It’s a perfectly good and catchy pop song. Suffers from having been overplayed, but it’s fun and memorable. It got made fun of a lot at the time and, apparently, still, but I still contend it’s a decent pop tune.
I usually ignore lists about annoying songs because they’re almost always the same songs. “Afternoon Delight.” “Disco Duck.” Et cetera. Everybody hates those.
However, I’m glad to see listed one perfectly atrocious little ditty that seems to play on the sound system of our local BJ’s Wholesale Club every time we visit.
“MMMBop” by Hansen.
Those squealy voices just go on and on in what seems like a never-ending loop that makes me want to drive a spike through my ears.
And I don’t know if this made the list but around this time of the year, “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” by the Jackson 5 makes me want to scream.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen any lists of most annoying songs before. I’ve certainly seen songs named most annoying, but not a list. So when I bumped across this and saw the songs listed, several of them are fine, and some I even like, which led to this thread. But any song if it gets significant air time and one doesn’t particularly like it, yeah, that is annoying.
Celine and the Titanic song got a LOT of air time when it came out, and people loved to bash it then, sure. So did I. But it’s a pretty song in a good movie, and today I’m back to liking it.
So the article becomes a case simply of, somebody’s gotta write something. So, BFD.
So do I, but the song itself gets on my nerves.
That was an odd list. It mixes up stupid fad songs like “Who Let The Dogs Out” and “Disco Duck” with very popular songs that some people are probably tired of hearing like “You’re Beautiful” and “Moves Like Jagger”.
As I get older, I’m generally more tolerant of music in the sense of believing there’s a time and place for most songs. But one song I never look forward to hearing is “Uptown Girl”, which I just find very whiny and phony with its “hey yo, I’m just a regular Joe Lunchbox nobody millionaire pop singer, why would a supermodel be interested in me?” story.
“Zombie” by the Cranberries? Really??
I waded into that list expecting to not find anything I like, but I was surprised to find several that I like (or, at least, don’t mind):
The Proclaimers – I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)
The Four Seasons – Sherry
Culture Club – Karma Chameleon
Wham! – Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go
The Champs – Tequila
The Coasters – Yakety Yak
Pharrell Williams – Happy
Steve Miller Band – The Joker
mmm
Yeah, alot of the point of these list is to just piss people off and get a reaction. But I do give the writer some creadit, as many of the songs listed actually suck. So throw in some decent ones and get the old people outraged is part of thier click bait process to get more views. Meh.
Those get annoying when you decipher their hidden subtext/double entendres.
If you are singing about sex, then SING ABOUT SEX already! Don’t couch it in a bunch of warm fuzzy euphemisms and metaphors.
We could do a series of polls on the worst songs to complement Mean Mr. Mustard’s best song polls…
I was surprised to see that “We Built This City” was written by Bernie Taupin, because he’s a great songwriter, and WBTC blows chunks.
Anyone who puts “I Want Candy” and “Tequila” on such a list is either trolling, an ass, or both. Most of the listed songs are obscure (to me, anyway) or just overplayed in some instances.
You know what? I’ve never really understood the hate for that song. Sure, it’s not that great, but I lived through the 80’s and there was a lot worse out there - I’m thinking Modern Talking; I’m thinking Human League. WBTC, while no classic, has a fairly catchy tune and doesn’t overdo it with the synchs.
I just don’t get it. Is it because of the whole Jefferson Airplane thing?
