I don’t remember any of the actresses in this…it was adapted from a book that my ex read a while ago, and a couple years ago we watched the DVD together on a plane ride. It’s about a couple of teenage girls, and more and more shit keeps happening to her and her friends throughout it (I believe it includes her and/or her friends getting pregnant (possibly via rape?), having drunken car accidents and committing suicide, getting kicked out of the house, families getting ripped apart and dying, etc).
I almost completely forgot about the movie until it popped into my head earlier today, and now I’m going crazy trying to remember what it was called, or who was in it…any ideas?
I looked at the title of the thread and instantly thought “God, I hope its not about ‘Riding in Cars with Boys’”. My Ex made me watch that damn movie and proceeded to break up with me immediately afterwords. To this day, I have a fatwa out on Drew Berrymore because of that movie. Well, thats one of the reasons anyway…
But yeah, it would almost fit your scenario. It was a book. Teenage girls or whatever. There probably was a rape or suicide in there somewhere. But it was set in the 60’s and 70’s, I think. So…moving right along.
They were both awesome, but as someone who, as a 13-year old, made the Thirteen characters look like pikers, I liked Virgin Suicides more as an interesting, stylized film. More than that, I thought it was fantastic, and showed Sofia Coppola to be a hugely promising young filmmaker, a prediction that she’s lived up to with her subsequent films, each, IMO, better than the last.
You can’t just ask her a simple question? Must’ve been a bad breakup. Then again, I can visualize you saying something like “What was that crappy teenage girl movie you forced me to watch?” and if it’s something she loved, that not going down too well.
I first thought it might be “Ghost World” because its very 90s and angsty – but plotwise the two girls really don’t endure a lot of tragedies that aren’t of their own devising. Not that I remember anyway. I do remember wanting to punch that black haired girl. Punch her in her stupid face.
I hated that movie and got really offended when my best friend said the two main characters reminded her of the two of us in high school. No matter which of the two characters she picked for herself or for me, it was an insult. No way were we like that.
