Identity this slug-like creature.

My new best friend may very well be a slug, but I didn’t see any eye stalks, and it seems to big to be a slug. It’s about a foot long and slimy.

Here’s a picture.

I’m in Northern California, if that helps.

Tha’s a bananna slug. Salt it.

It’s a banana slug

Yep, that’s what it is. Strange, I’ve never seen one before.

Hey, hey, do you know if you lick one, your tongue will tingle?

Was on a school field trip when I was about 7. Our guide found one. Demonstrated it. We were totally grossed out.

the crowd chants Lick-it! Lick-it! Lick it!

Your “new best friend” is a slug!?!?!? Don’t mean to criticize, but dude, you’ve got to get out more!

:stuck_out_tongue:

The banana slug is the official mascot at UC Santa Cruz.

I just want to say that the banana slug is the stickiest creature I have ever laid hands on. I touched one once and the slime stayed on my finger like a giant booger that just would not. come. off! I will try my best to never touch one again.

OH! This reminds me of a story!

About ten years ago we had a shower stall outside our house for cleaning ourselves after a trip to the beach.

While the rest of the family and friends were waiting our turn and eating watermelon, I heard a bloodcurdling scream in the stall.
I see my mother plastered against the wall of the house with this TEN INCH black and yellow striped slug inching its way to her.

I say "OOOHH…a Tiger Slug…they bite "

At this, she cries like a little girl, so I kick the slug away from her and nudge it into the garden.

I was hoping this thread would die a quiet death so the entire community wouldn’t find out that I didn’t know what a bananna slug looked like.

Yeah, well at least you’re not going to HELL like Enola.
That’s a terrible thing to do to your Mom!

I KNOW! I got some slug slime (not banana–another variety) on my hand once and after washing with warm water and soap for several minutes, I still could not get it off!

Try Hagfish slime! http://oceanlink.island.net/oinfo/hagfish/hagfish.html

Do banana slugs actually taste like bananas? I need to know.

Mmm… wrap 'em in tinfoil and toss them on the BBQ. Gooey!

Oh yuck - that site links to a page with hagfish slime RECIPES.

Scone, anyone? I would, but I just ate…

When I was a kid in Seattle I remember a Slug Festival that was a sort of silly annual celebration of the many races of slugs that infest the ergion. I think it did not take hold as well as some other, less mollusk-dependent festivals, although the beer tended to flow rather freely. In addition to various slug craft ranging from wooden leopard slugs (still a big hit in gift stores) to 3-feet long blown glass slugs with which one would adorn the dining room table, there was the : hurk : cullinary competition.

One year the prize went to a banana slug creme pie. Yes, the judge (innebriated according to the newspaper article) actualy ate a piece of the pie and deemed it “yummy.” Sounds like a good accompaniment to “crunchy frog” if you ask me.

I recon they’d taste not so much like bananas as much as escargot or maybe clams. Although horrifically gooey and vile (as anyone who has ever had the pleasure of locating one with his bare feet can attest) they are quite muscular and tough. They are mollusks.

Enjoy.
: hurf! :

“Lawn prawns”! I love it

Once again though, thanks, but I reallly couldn’t eat another bite…

a quote from Inigo’s linked website:

‘Continue cooking and stirring and ingesting until your Lawn Prawn Jubilee looks good enough to eat!’

The ingesting in this sentence refers to ingesting a 2 oz shot of tequila. May I just say that it would take a great many 2 oz tequila shots ingested before sauteed slugs looks good enough to eat!
