msmith537, you seem to be missing a major point: not only was the situation not very ethical, yojimboguy didn’t even get the fucking equipment he needed.
So, not only was it shady that his boss’s boss used her own husband as a “consultant”, he was totally incompetent at it.
Well consider reporting it to one of the doctors who heads one of the OTHER departments in the hospital. If where you work is like most hospitals they are all trying to cut costs. They’d love to be handed evidence that another department is screwing the budget AND basically embezzling money. That’s great ammo when it comes to next year’s budget. The person who you went to will be able to say, “Look I saved all this money by finding this out”. And as usual your contributions will probably be ignored because nobody wants to share the credit.
Yeah that sucks and all but it happens in every company. There will always be stuff that doesn’t work like it’s supposed to or stuff that isn’t the right stuff or some idiot manager who doesn’t know what they’re doing. You can’t get all worked up over every little thing at work otherwise you’ll go nuts. Most of it is out of your control anyway.
Going after your manager’s boss is not that easy and will likely get you fired or laid off if you don’t do it properly. A company is not going to just up and fire an employee based on some anonymous letter. And if it doesn’t work, now all you have is some manager on your case. And what will you get out of it anyway?
You are better off getting as close to this idiot as possible. Document whatever you can, try to assess the political climate and patiently wait for the right opportunity. I’ve seen too many people simply get themselves in trouble by tatling to some director.
It strikes me as a little hypocritical for you to criticize anyone about their work attitude while you’re taking off days to interview and surfing the job boards on company time. Doesn’t sound like you were doing anything special to help the company.
I don’t want to work with apathetic people any more than anyone else does. That does not mean that I am going to get into a potentially career jepordizing situation over every morally suspect behavior.
