IE6 and JPGs not getting along

I am using IE6 browser and it works fine displaying pages with JPGs in them which I download from the Net. . . BUT the same exact page loaded from my computer will display GIFs ok but not the JPGs.

I just created a page and it would not display. I upload all the files to my website and then download from there and they display fine. This has me stumped. Any ideas?

I had a very similar problem in that IE6 would happily display all image types while online, but would not display GIFs on my local machine, even though the images were correctly referenced and not corrupt in any way. I’d be interested to hear if the problems are related.

Go to download.com and get Irfanview. It’s a free image viewer and it works great.

What OS are you using? A common problem (although you probably know this) is that internet servers are case-sensitive, whereas Windows is not. So if you have whatever.JPG on your machine, and the document references whatever.jpg, it’ll work fine on your machine, but not on the internet. You seem to be having the opposite problem, though.

Crusoe, it seems the same type of problem. How did you correct it? Or did it go away by itself? I am using IE6 on my three computers and this is only happening in one of them. I guess reinstalling IE would probably solve it.

Reeder, I have had Irfanview for a long time and it is not a browser. I am trying to get my browser to display HTML pages correctly.

Achernar, I am not sure what conclusion I can draw from your post except that I could access my computer from another computer

Sailor: it didn’t go away, unfortunately. I was using GIFs on my web page, and switched to PNGs instead. Those displayed fine, and since GIFs display fine while connected I haven’t done any more to look into it.

hmmm, as I say, it is only happening in one computer and I have a feeling the problem would go away if I reinstall IE6 (which I prefer not to do for now).

Well one conclusion would be that you should tell us what operating system(s) you’re using.

I suspect this could have something to do with filetype assignments. When you install IE6, I believe it registers itself as interested in viewing GIF and JPEG files, along with HTML. That is, if you double-click a GIF file, IE will open to display it.

If you then install some other software like Paint Shop Pro and that software “steals” the association to GIF, perhaps IE will notice that and refuse to display GIF files when loaded in a different fashion. That would be bogus of IE to do, but it wouldn’t surprise me.

That’s just a semi-WAG, though.

You could eliminate this as a possibility by trying this experiment: From Windows, double click on a GIF, then double click on a JPEG. Note which applications open which files.

The solution is to use another browser other than Imploding Exploder. Mozilla 1.0 is finally out, after all.

      • This is rather strange becaue I have mozilla 99, and early this morning (several hours ago) I used it as normal, but now, it will not load most images from most sites. I don’t get any images at all from this site, for instance. I verified the “download image” options, but it was set on “accept all images”, and I haven’t ever altered the settings… - DougC

Achernar, I am using IE6 and WIN98SE on all three computers but I only have the problem on this one.

douglips, like Reeder, you are misunderstanding the problem. I am quite familiar with WIN file associations etc. The problem is one of IE6 not displaying JPG.

Urban Ranger, it has been said many times already but I have to say, again, that type of post is just out of place here. I am sure you can find in the Pit what most people think about such posts.

sailor, your problem is that your web browser does not display images properly all of the time. Urban Ranger posted a solution to your problem. Just because you don’t prefer his solution, does not mean his post is “out of place.”

askol

askol, you are quite new but this has been addressed in the past and, in general, we do not like people giving solutions of the type “get rid of windows and get a mac” or “get rid of windows and get linux”, etc. They are not solutions in that they are self-evident and they are not what the OP is looking for.

I have already said IE6 works fine in my other two computers and this problem would most certainly be corrected by reinstalling IE so telling me to install something else is pointless and a waste of badwith for the only purpose of bashing IE. (Maybe we can have a mod correct or clarify this?)

In case it wasn’t clear: If possible, want to get IE to work correctly without reinstalling it.

Is Microsoft planning to unveil a new proprietary image format in copetition to JPEGs, perhaps?

Seriously, though, maybe the problem is in how you uploaded your images to your web hosting service. If you’re using an FTP program, for instance, you will need to send your images in binary mode – if you send them in ASCII/text mode, the high bit will get stripped, and the images won’t be viewable.

:: sigh ::
rjung, if you read the OP carefully you will see you did not understand it. IE displays pages from the NET just fine. It is those on my disk it does not display.

Okay, a few questions. I’m trying to be very clear here. Are there only certain HTML and JPG files which do not show up when used together, or does it happen with every JPG referenced by every HTML file which you have saved locally? And if it’s not all of them, is it consistent for the ones which it is? For the HTML documents which are erroneous, have you opened them in a differen browser? For the JPGs which are erroneous, have you tried opening them directly in IE? Have you tried downloading a page which displays okay and opening it locally?

Achernar, IE6 will not display any JPG files stored in my disc whether called by an HTML page or addressed directly by IE6. The same exact HTML document and JPGs uploaded to another server work just fine.

I just replaced the HOSTS file just in case but it did not fix the problem

I think it is a problem I might live with until I next reinstall IE since it only affects local files and not Net files, but I am curious about the cause

When you say “reinstall IE”, do you mean the same thing as “repair IE”? If not, you can try the repair function (if IE6 has it).

Navigate to Programs/Accessories/System Tools and click on “System Information”.

When the program starts, click on the menu selection “Tools” and select “Internet Explorer Repair Tools”.

Then select “Repair Internet Explorer”.

I hope that I’ve understood your situation correctly and that this helps.

Just curious: if you drag a JPG from your local disk and drop it on IE, does it display correctly? (I don’t know what this might mean either way.)

rowrrbazzle, thanks so much for your repair tip as I did not know it even though I am familiar with the System Information program. I learn something every day. Unfortunately I tried it and it did not fix the problem and now I have doubts a full reinstall will solve the problem.

IE6 does not display JPGs stored in my computer or other computers on the network but displays correctly JPGs from the Net
