IE7 Beta/Firefox

I just got the beta IE 7, tabbed browsing the works, now if I could only find some extensions like the mouse gestures for FF I may switch back as IE always seemed quicker loading. Anyone know if there are any IE extensions for mouse gestures?

Anyone else try the IE7 yet? It seems to be a whole new browser, a jump in the right direction for the Microsoft monster? In my opinion after using it for a day, unless I find gestures I will stick with FF but this seems too be a nice improvement for IE.
*If this is the wrong forum, flog me, then move me please

The new IE has extensions? Do they actually call them “extensions” as Mozilla/Firefox does?

No they call them add on’s but they seem similiar to extensions in that there are many the same as FF, like this . You can manage add-ons much like FF allows you to manage extensions. Not sure if they are as easy to use as FF because I have yet to download an add on. I will as soon as I am done here for fun!
I am still trying to get the tabs to be below (on top the current page) where right now its situated above the “File Edit View Favorites…” but below the address bar.
It also has some anti phishing thing that automatically checks websites to make sure its not a phishing website automatically if you have it on (Which is the default setting)

I am using FF right now with IE7 open to answer any questions. As I didn’t read the agreement I cannot be sure if I can give out the URL to download it themselves though that seems like it shouldn’t matter as Windows makes you validate before allowing you to install.

Being that I have not used IE for almost 3 years except in minor times when I needed too, I may not be the best reviewer.
But the add-ons I tried where harder to implement (I downloaded a mouse gestures for IE) then FF by far. The speed is quicker then FF in loading, but since I am used to FF and other OS browsers I do not like the “feel” of IE7 but others may.

In a related vein: Windows guru calls for IE7 boycott, due to its lack of support for web standards.

As a web developer who gets tired of hacking around IE’s quirks, I applaud this move.

I’ll write a mini review when I am done using it for my browsing tonight. For the most part I am finding the ads annoying again after using various extensions on FF to keep them at bay.
It does seem to be more on the security issue side as the defaults are all set to a high level of security (Javascript anti phishing and more)

I am viewing my own websites using it, in various settings. And it seems to be okay.

One thing I do like is IE7 automatically gives you a “blank” tab to use maybe FF does somehow as well but I haven’t found the way.

It will make it a little less painful to “View this page in IE” when needed.

Right now I will give it a 4 out of 10 compared to a 8 out of 10 for FF, and unless I find something “WOW” I will not be switching back to IE anytime soon.

As I am not a programmer some people have asked how I get the beta’s but I have been getting most of the beta’s since AOM (The game) and have gotten most of them since, both games and programs from Microsoft. Of course I have to submit a “survey” on the beta’s which I have no problem doing unless its for something I refuse to install.

Oh, I’m sure you’ll be thrilled with IE7 then. Since it will be non-compliant in a different fashion than IE6, and since IE6 will continue to be in extremely widespread use for anyone still using Win98, ME, or 2k, you’ll have to hack around two different sets of quirks. Good luck with that! :stuck_out_tongue:

Either that, or stick a disclaimer on my web stuff that says “Don’t blame me if this looks like a mess because you’re using a sh*tty Microsoft Internet Explorer instead of a real browser.”

Forget where I read this, but the initial release of IE7 will not be web-standards compliant (especially when it comes to CSS).

But they said that release after that will be compliant CSS-wise.

Will that change me from Firefox to IE? No.

But I did get a huge “Thank God” from the web developers I work with.

Stay tuned. The web will be a much better place if Microsoft can finally understand that just meeting simple standards will make everyone’s life easier.

Ok, so that will never happen.

In Seattle-Redmond, standards will set you!

I’m not sure about IE7, but there are a few – err, I’m not sure how to describe them: wraparound interfaces? alternative UIs? browsers? – which use the IE6 rendering engine and add things like tabbed browsing and mouse gestures.

For example, Maxthon gives you tabbed browsing, mouse gestures, ad blocking and a bunch of other stuff.

Most of these IE-based browsers (others include NetCaptor, Avant Browser, and maybe the new Netscape 8) actually kick Firefox’s ass in terms of features, at least out of the box (but FF can mimic their functionality as long as you have the right extensions).

IMHO, IE7 is way overdue and is simply playing catchup – most of those features have been available in other browsers for years. Anybody who wants them should already have them. The only thing I’m looking forward to in IE7 is better support for things like CSS 2.1 and PNG translucency – but that also should’ve been added long ago.
