(I did a search, but I don’t think we’ve done this before. My apologies if my inferior search-fu missed something)
Okay, so I can’t be the only one who has those movie moments where the actor portraying a character wins me over despite all my natural tendencies. For example, no one I can think of would give Max Schreck the time of day if dawn was 3 minutes hence, but if Frank Langella (or possibly even Christopher Lee) came tapping on the window they’d fall all over themselves to let him in.
So, who are you “converting” for? Include a link if possible.
Here are two of mine to get us started:
If Jesus really looked like Willem DaFoe, sign me up for a baptism!
Conversely, if Satan really looked like Gabriel Byrne, I’d be okay with bearing the AntiChrist.
Actually, while not incredibly hansome, Max Schrek wasn’t all thatr ugly, when he wasn’t made up as Count Orlock.
There seems to be a persistent rumor that he hasn’t been photographed outside of his “Nosferatu” makeup, but it ain’t true – he made quite a few movies. There’s a still of the un-made-up Schrek in David Sklar’s Hollywood Gothic and a different picture of him in Sklar’s V is for Vampire.
Odd fact – Sklar has researched the matter, and treports in the latter book that not only does “nosferatu” mean “the Undead” or “Vampire” in some Slavic tongue, the word does not even exist prior to the reference work Stoker used in researching Dracula. Sklar thinks that the guy who first claimed the word meant “vampire” may have mistaken a Catrpathian word meaning something else entirely.
While I’m sure that Max wasn’t beaten with the ugly stick, you have to admit he did make a pretty ugly Dracula. And Bela was… too over the top and creepy. No, I likes me some Langella Dracula.
