What is the thread, for starters. Can you provide a link?
And please tell us what’s happening with your system. Kind of computer, operating system, how you access the Dope – cable or DSL or dialup.

This is a 4GB gaming computer from iBuyPower, OS= Vista :mad:. Access is through DSL.
And I have NEVER experienced hang up before.
And it’s only on the WoW gaming thread. NEVER on any other thing that I post to.

Not sure why you would have a problem with that thread.
I just looked at it and after I stopped laughing at the first post “Okay…the World of Warcraft Questions thread is getting reaaaally long…29 pages and over 1000 posts.”, I didn’t have any problems navigating in the thread. [Nearly 12K posts, over 300K views]

Do you have a link? I’ll give it a try. I don’t believe the length of a thread really impacts performance, since I don’t believe the entire thread is cached or loaded when you enter it. Only the page you are on. So, the size of the thread SHOULDN’T affect performance (I’m not web designer though, so grain of salt).

Assuming it’s this one (and based on the length I’d say that’s a good assumption ;)), I didn’t have any trouble loading it at all, FWIW. Loaded up as quickly and worked as well as any other thread.
(Maybe this is another instance of problems for some 'dopers with something related to the ads??)

What happens when the thread opens is it will open on the last post, but then will not let me scroll UP until 36 seconds pass. (Yup, I timed it and yup it’s still doing it)

I have the same problem with every thread, not just the WoW one.
Every single long thread, say over 200 posts which is more than one page, has been hanging for me. They take a long, long time to load. If I don’t notice the progress bar and try to scroll or click on anything in any way the page will freeze up, go to black, or do other odd things.

And I have IE7. Tried to add 8 once, computer shut down and had to recover it.
Also, I did a search on “computer lags on scroll” and found an answer that relates to something on my system which is a “memory hog” of I need to update ny video card driver (or something to that effect).

I doubt it will help, but you could try and load Firefox and see if it makes a difference. Since that didn’t seem to help with the folks having the problem with the ads, it probably won’t help you either. You could try and change your host file as linked in the slowness thread, though I don’t think anyone in that thread confirmed that it was helpful.

Firefox is what I’m using, and I’m not having any problems.
You can download the MS DeskTop Heap Monitor from here to see if your heap allocation is a problem. Unfortunately most problems in this area are related to video memory limitations.
Yeah, it’s what I’m using as well and no problems here either (I’m not using Windows either, though so it could be that). However, in another thread related to board performance, another poster was saying they were still having issues while using Firefox, so not sure if it will help, as I’m not sure exactly what the problem is. I think in the other thread the problem was more ISP/connection oriented, while I have no idea what the prob here is.

Well, ya know, I have a VERY red embarrassed face at the moment :o and I want to apologize to y’all for my frustrations (especially to jayjay and all of those in the thread who know my propensity for going ballistic these days).
It’s STILL doing it. I took the advice of someone I found on google who advised that one should update the driver on their video card, thinking that this would help, but it didn’t, y’all.
But… it ONLY does it HERE - in this thread - I SWEAR it does.
I know it costs, but I’d be willing to pay to give someone remote access and let them see what is going on.
I feel especially bad because I too was loving the length of the thread, and visited it daily/hourly/minutely (sometimes). I just LOVE SFG’s commentary and her assistance. (Everyone’s assistance) But then it all started hanging up, and it was at times when I’d post a question during the game, and I’m sorry - it just made me blow a gasket.
I’m sorry jayjay and everyone and I thank you very sincerely for trying to help me by creating this new thread.

What you can try doing first, before you go to any pay-based solution, is download HijackThis and post the log. (If you don’t want to publish the log in a public place, then you can send me a PM with it and to any other computer savvy friends). HijackThis gives a pretty comprehensive information scan of your computer, lots of information we can read thorugh and see if something’s wrong.
The next step is to post a detailed description of your problems - how it looks like when it “hangs up”, how long it takes to load, do you have to restart the computer, etc, etc. Basically what happens when you try to access the thread.
It’s probably best if you start a new thread on it in GQ, since the computer savvy people hang out there and you’ll get more responses.
