I’d like to start by saying that having my own set of neuro/psychiatric problems, I have only the deepest respect for people who seize life with the sort of predatory tenacity I can only dream of and do so in spite of serious physical handicaps. This thread has nothing to do with you but only the poseurs who would denigrate and trivialize the image of all disabled persons.

Having said that, I think if someone comes to this or any other forum with virtually no posting history and starts in with some sensationalist post hawking their disability like a whore shoving her ass in your face at a cheap brothel, then that insect is fair game and guilty until proven innocent.

While people with disabilities may have more of a need for companionship and social interaction due to having fewer opportunities for finding same via what most would consider the “normal” routes, as someone with disabilities, I’m here to say that we’re not morons. IOW, while I may be social inept much of the time, that does not describe most disabled folks and even less so people whose disabilities are primarily physical. Ergo, none of us, not even moi (and that’s saying something) would be so fucking stupid as to come on to a strange forum and immediately start grandstanding unless it were to satisfy some ulterior agenda.

I get the impression people are generally more caring here and also more inclined to give people the proverbial ‘benefit of the doubt.’ However to the extent that this is a less than rare phenomenon, it may be that the forum has gained a reputation as being an easy mark. If so, it’s my experience that this happens IRL when
a) one doesn’t trust one’s instincts,
b) you are too self-critical when exercising a prudent level of caution and
c) you are unduly timid in challenging people you suspect of making a fool of you.
