Suppose Al-queda has a high level mole inside the pakistani military, and succeeds in penetrating the sucurity arrangements. a massive bomb demolishes the presidential motorcade, taking out Musharrif as well. What would happen? Would Cheney order a breaking off with pakistan? What course would the iraq war take? frankly, from what I read, pakistan is a very dangerous place. i’m not sure (if I were Bush0 that i would visit.
Cheney becomes president.
And that makes the world a very scary place. Okay so, I don’t know what could happen but I do know I wouldn’t want it too. Could it erupt into a new war, or would it re-focus America on capturing/killing Bin Laden?
If it Al Qaeda did it, that might happen. Targeted strikes on [whoever is responsible] might be more likely because we’re just not in a position to fight an entire war at this point. And we’d probably need the new leadership of Pakistan to be behind us - I assume they would be - because they’re a nuclear power and an important ally.
World-wide party (seriously)
Cheney orders major strikes against targets - possibly using small nukes. (WAG)
I don’t know but you can bet your butt that Halliburton stock will skyrocket.
Boston is left a smoking crater.
Just like to say a quick “Hello” to the nice NSA folks who are undoubtably reading this after finding the words “Bush” and “Assassinated” in the same sentence.
Way to go thread killer. Its not like they log our IPs… oh wait…never mind, You didn’t see me I was never here.
I for one welcome our Republican overlords.
There are people out there dumb enough to try assassinating Bush, but most anyone who pays attention to politics knows that if you blow up the sock puppet on Cheney’s hand, you still have Cheney running the government.
As already stated Chaney becomes president
Assuming Pakistan had nothing to do with it, why should he?
I’m guessing a more hard line to be honest. I think Chaney would definitely be inclined to say fuck politics and stay until the end of his term…reguardless of what anyone else wants or reguardless if the situation either improves or continues to disintigrate.
Pakistan (and that entire region) is a fairly dangerous place to be if you are a westerner, thats true enough. Probably marginally more dangerous than some of the less savory areas of DC at night.
Being Bush though its EXTREMELY dangerous for him. To compensate he has a boat load of security both our own and that provided by the host country. Yeah, I wouldn’t go either, but then I wouldn’t be stupid enough to run for President…a more thankless job just doesn’t exist. But Bush has to go…thats why he makes the big bucks.
I’m sure they will understand.

That’s a good point. Cheney is so unpopular (18% approval at present, and I doubt he cares about that either) that he’d probably do whatever he felt it takes - although the check on that is the fact that he’d still need some level of Congressional support.
Does he? Think about the situation. Bush is assassinated but muslim extremists. So there is going to be the chaos of the succession, a period of stunned mourning (well, maybe not here ), and then a transition to a Chaney administration. Also its going to fire up a lot of Americans…perhaps not as much as 9/11 but there are going to be a significant number of pissed off folks (I wouldn’t be too happy myself…Bush may be a fuck up but he’s OUR fuckup, and assassinating him is taking a direct shot at US). Figure all this would take up the rest of this year. So, its 2007 give or take a few months.
I figure Chaney can stretch things out easily (if he wants too) for the rest of the year…mid way through there will be the distractions of elections after all.
I’m sure he doesn’t give a fuck what anyone says and I’m sure that he would ‘stay the course’ reguardless of whatever happens there in Iraq. And I don’t see what could prevent him from doing so in light of the web of half guesses and pure conjecture and bullshit I’ve now spun.

Anyone remember WWI?
Good points, XT. He’d have plenty of support for a time, but he’d serve until January 2009, and I’m sure Cheney has things beyond Iraq and terror that he’d like to do. You know, eliminating Social Security, immanetizing the eschaton, that kind of thing.
You mean beyond what we are doing naturally from decades of mismangment, increased numbers drawing on it for longer, and the utter lack of desire to change any aspect of it…
I think we’d do anything we could to spin it as the work of terrorists not in any way affiliated with the Pakistani government. WAY too many nuclear powers nearby to get involved in a real war.
And we know he’s good with a rifle. And this time…it’s personal!
Shotgun
Yes…I actually meant 200(8) not 200(7). I figure he would be good for the rest of this year and next, and then there would be the distraction of the presidential races in 200(8) that would carry him through until January. He could easily keep us in Iraq, even if the situation goes completely tits up (unlike the current ass over tea cups version) until his term was over. No way is HE going to run, so he would really have no fear and could do pretty much what he wanted too…within reason. And keeping troops in Iraq would certainly be ‘within reason’ for him to do…after all, they are already there.
So, much as I know most of you don’t like Bush lets all cross our fingers that he doesn’t get wacked in Pakistan. I don’t know about the rest of you, but the devil I know is better than the undead that…well, I know even better and am much more frightened of to be perfectly honest.
