According to this LINK, some scientists are saying we are heading into a new ice age that could last 10-20 years or so starting in the year 2030.
Well if that were so, now would be the time to get ready. For example they could push for greenhouse construction and ready new agricultural areas in warmer areas.
Or what if its like that movie “Deep Impact” where the government only announces it at the last minute but also says its been preparing?
I think that describing any 10-20 year-long phenomenon by using the term “ice age” (even qualified as “mini”) smacks of alarmism.
Beyond that, I find myself hard-pressed to imagine conditions in which a predictable disaster coincides with EVERY government agreeing to suppress information about it.
Despite the overwhelming evidence that global warming is going to cause severe problems over the next few decades, the government has not attempted to hide the information, mitigate its effects, or prepare for its consequences.
If Americans wanted an environment compatible with human life, they shouldn’t have elected Republicans, who have been denying:
A. That such an effect could be possible (the greennhouse effect was first noted in the late 60’s)
B. That such an effect had occurred
C. OK, it is getting warmer - but there’s no evidence that humans have anything to do with it
I think W once slipped and said something about “maybe”.
A classic from a GOP Administer of EPA: “Do we have to save every sub-species?” He was referring to a red squirrel endangered by some project that was going to make money.
Red squirrel, gray squirrel - whatever, we got plenty!
This is the guy who is supposed to be protecting the environment.
Anybody see the dorky movie “Miracle Mile” with Denise Crosby trying desperately to act? The beginning point of the movie is where someone spills a big and important secret. That’s pretty much how it would likely play out.
There was some leakage during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Occasional guys, in the know, made quiet phone calls to their wives. “Why don’t you get the kids and drive up to visit Aunt Tilla in Vermont. Can’t say any more.” If the crisis had lasted longer, the leakage would have continued, and spread geometrically.
Personally, I believe the government would make a real announcement. But I’m an optimist that way.
Nonsense. It would play out with Anthony Edwards hanging up the phone, assuming it was a prank and going about the rest of his day until the bombs fell.
Suppose scientists discovered that a great threat to our civilization was coming. All the government would have to do is just tell oil companies that this disaster would threaten their profits, and then a massive denial campaign would be created to convince the populace that there is no threat at all. Even if all the scientists went public with the information, suppression wouldn’t be necessary.
I think this article gives a good summary of how it would play out.
Governments are made of a bunch of people with discordant opinions and agendas. I’d say that if more than, say, a dozen people knows about it, the secret would be impossible to keep.
