AHA YES! fistpump I based this speculation on the plot of another film and I think it’s a fitting tribute to Mr. Washburne.
The rest of your proposal leaves me cold but I’m glad I’m not the only one who saw this possibility. I think they fit together really well (he’s already obsessed with her even if it’s because he hates her/is terrified of her) - I like how they’re both the ‘unpredictable’ elements on the crew…they’re sort of character foils, and I’d love to see them interact more. Plus it’d be hot.
I’d prefer that they pretended the movie never happened and went on to do what Joss had been planning to do. If that means following the basic plot of the movie, spread out over many episodes, then I’m fine with that. This is not a vote for keeping anyone alive, just for seeing things unfold at a Firefly pace.
Option 1. 25 years of DC comics have basically taught me that retcons suck and the damage they do can never be repaired. And the “Wash is about to die” thing would totally be hanging over the crew if they just did the interim.
That happened in the series pilot episode, which is also titled “Serenity.” Maybe you are conflating that with the movie? In any case, the beginning of the movie picks up after the series with Simon and River already part of the “crew” on Serenity and River helping out with their current job/heist. Actually, the very beginning of the movie is the video archive of Simon rescuing River from the Alliance facility, as viewed by The Operative.
Pretend the movie never was made.
There was a great back story to Shepherd.
Wash was cool.
I hated the Buffyization of River in the movie. Incredibly stupid her smiting the Reivers like Samson with the jawbone of an ass.
I’d cheerfully ignore Serenity because I didn’t really like it. The Reavers didn’t make a whole lot of sense (I admit the origin story is mildly interesting, but how a bunch of berserkers manage to operate spaceships eludes me). I didn’t like how ridiculously over-the-top River was (I seem to recall the series was vague about whether or not she had psychic powers, suggesting she might just be extremely perceptive in her pseudo-autistic fashion - some posters disagreed and cited specific episodes which I’ve not yet reviewed) and seeing Simon bust River out of stir (as opposed to spending his personal fortune to pay others to do so) contradicts his series characterization as a somewhat naive academic.
I’m okay with ignoring the movie, with second choice just picking up a few months afterward with Book and Wash dead, and hopefully River’s abilities become less ridiculous as she gets a better grip on her sanity.
Seriously, it would be totally awesome if Firefly came back.
I loved Wash and love love LOVE Zoe (awesome personality: bad-ass with heart) and I didn’t want Wash to die because I don’t want Firefly to lose him and I didn’t want Zoe to go through the pain. Zoe deserves happiness.
I voted No because I wanted the movie to remain canon. I saw the movie (and I totally loved the movie! ) before I saw the TV series and it was the movie that made me buy the DVD of the TV series.
Maybe they could bring back Wash without ignoring the movie? Maybe through a wormhole or some top secret experiment or something? It’s sci-fi after all.
I LOVED Wash. But cheating death …even for him, isn’t right. I want to know Book’s backstory, there were a lot of loose ends left for him, too, but bringing him back just feels so wrong. Dead is dead.
I am definitely in for some serious flashbacks though. I also would really like seeing Zoe pregnant or even a little Wash, but let the characters have personal tragedy and live through it.
Not sure how I’d feel about Jayne and River. That’s an interesting idea that I both hate and am strangely intrigued by.
You think the Doctor’s going to let him…bonk… his sister? I think Jayne would have a really bad hypodermic accident, like accidentally by mistake inject himself with a quart of morphine.
