Firefly fans - How would you feel about a reboot?

I love Firefly, and it pains me greatly that it was left in a way that makes any continuation pretty nearly impossible (both in terms of narrative, and rights ownership).

But I got to thinking… what about a reboot? I mean, a reboot with the same characters recast - younger actors - start the story in a different place (before the Unification War) and build it forward.

Of course the characters wouldn’t have met each other - so it would have to be a number of threads that were only loosely intertwined (although it would be sort of fun to see characters passing through the background of each others’ lives - it worked OK in Lost)

I’m guessing most fans will probably say no way, and I’m not really sure I like the idea myself, but I am very hungry for more stories set in the Firefly universe.

(For the record, this quarter-baked idea only really came to mind because I’m sitting watching Beyond on Netflix, and there are some shots in which Burkely Duffield looks sort of like a young Nathan Fillion)

I’d vote a strong “No.”

Firefly was what it was. And is. Any effort to reboot it would turn out more like Star Trek than Battlestar Galactica, I’m afraid. Better to let it go than sully its memory with a substandard reboot.

Different characters in the same world would be fine, as long as they had the same writers. No reboot please.

Yes, this. Please, a thousand times, this. I don’t want you making a mess of trying to make the existing characters fresh. Make your own characters, and make them have their own arcs.

Same universe even.
(Same universe odd?)

Lots of stories that could be told on the outer planets. You’d still have a space western, just not one set on Serenity.

Echo the others – plenty of Verse to play with. New story in the same universe, different characters (and different ship) would be just fine with me. No need to recast the same characters.

Even better, use the original cast (minus Tudyk and the other actor who I think died recently) for new stories.

Yeah, different stories, same 'verse? Sure. Reboot with the same characters recast? Not only no, but (insert Chinese obscenity here) no!

Bolding added.

I’m sorry, what?

You’re either say Alan Tudyk died recently (he didn’t) or that there’s some other reason he should be excluded. Both of which are just wrong.

Tudyk’s character died in the movie.

I think the other one he’s thinking of was Booke, played by Ron Glass, who unfortunately did die. I think it was this year.

Yep. RIP.

OK, how about a tastefully-animated series set somewhere within the original series timeline, voiced by the original cast (Not sure how to include Book - maybe audition for a very close voice match or digitally create it from all the samples of his life’s work?)

Fine with me!

Book was also killed in the movie, so there’s no need to try to replace Ron Glass.

I think I’m too attached to Nathan Fillion in his role.
I don’t like that they rebooted Star Trek with a new Kirk, Spock and the rest.
I don’t like that they rebooted Ghostbusters and even Battlestar Galactica I would have enjoyed more under a different name.

I’d also prefer and animated series.

It’s like we have an irrational number of universes.

Agreed. The crew and passengers of the Serenity were surely not the only “fringe-of-society” types in the 'verse (or whatever it was called). Heck, only two of them were actual veterans of the rebellion. There are numerous potential stories to tell and the Firefly characters might be referenced or even have cameos, though the focus should be on a new group.

I’d think you could probably have a new show, set in the same universe, and possibly have them occasionally cross paths with Serenity and/or the various characters from the earlier show, without making it “Firefly 2020” or something.

I think it could even be interesting if we had a set of stories from the aspect of the Alliance. Unfortunately, I think any attempt to do it would suffer from prequelitis.

I am no super fan but I did enjoy the show. I really don’t see a point to a reboot. It’s not like the fan base is so large as to guarantee an audience (even world wide box office didn’t cover production costs of Serenity) and “space cowboys” is plenty easy to do without a reboot of an old show. The characters and Universe were neat but not so unique it requires replication to get the same feel.
