Sounds like details are scarce, but there are whispers of a Firefly reboot coming to Disney+. Not even clear if Whedon is involved, as he has some controversy going that I’m unaware of the details on.
Article claims (and this will probably irk folks…) that they are looking to reboot the same characters, but more PG (and specifically points out that Inara would likely be out because of that).
That said, I will definitely give it a shot if this comes to fruition.
I tried Disney+ its first few months, but quickly ran through all content it had that I cared to peruse. Unsubscribed before the Mandalorian came along. If this show actually came to pass, I might give it another chance…briefly.
A friend of mine, who knows that I’m a Firefly fan, shared that article with me earlier today. As Chronos says, I’d love for the show to return, but I’m skeptical that it can be done right.
Two of the main characters from the TV series died in the Serenity film (and one of those actors, Ron Glass, has also passed away), and I don’t think you could do it right without Inara. And, if it’s a reboot, with a different cast playing the same characters, I don’t think that I’d be interested; I identify the characters too much with those particular actors.
As we have basically zero information about this, I think I’ll keep an open mind.
FWIW, Disney has had a pretty good run of series - The Mandalorian, Star Wars Rebels, the last season of Clone Wars. I’m inclined to be cautiously optimistic. If it goes ahead.
If Star Wars taught me anything, it’s that sometimes fans need to let things go, enjoy what they have, and not worry so much about new content. I enjoyed Firefly and I wish that it had a longer run than it originally did but it’s no longer 2002 and things have changed. On the flip side, enough time has passed that they could create a Firefly: The Next Generation series!
Huh. Maybe Chinese people, supposedly one of the major powers, would be something other than crime bosses and hookers. Dare we imagine… maybe even a main character? It’d be neat to find a new star.
The article (which is very questionably sourced to begin with) describes the project as being in “early development.”
In entertainment parlance, that means the company gave the concept to a couple of people (possibly outside collaborators) and said, “See if there’s anything to be done here, and come back in six months or a year with a report and maybe a pitch.”
It does not mean the company is actually making the project. There are always hundreds of not thousands of such ideas in “early development.” It’s part of the whole “throwing spaghetti at the wall” aspect of the industry. Maybe one project in fifty gets past this phase into “active” development, and then from there a further one in fifty gets a production deal. (And even with a production deal, a fair number still fall apart.)
I guarantee Disney has all kinds of crazy shit in “early development” that we’ve never heard of, and will never hear of. And the odds that this proposed series goes ahead are miniscule.
I choose to be cautiously optimistic. The Mandalorian proves Disney can do something really, really well. It’s a universe that was not completely mined. Sure, I loved the cast too. But, I loved the premise and the execution also, and have no illusions that had another cast been in there I would have loved them too.
It might suck. It might never happen (though I tend to think it will). I’ll give it at least five episodes of watching, regardless of quality, due to the name alone.
“There is a twist here and the twist is that they see the show as ideal family-friendly programming for Disney+. My source tells me they’re planning to target it more at a PG-adventure, family audience and less at the sort of PG-13 dynamic the original Joss Whedon show went for.”
So, they’re going to make it a glorified, “Lost in Space”? I’ve lost interest already.
" Movie theaters are done. The biggest chain in the world will likely shutter permanently next month and the others are likely to follow suit."
There have been a bunch of TV series revivals and reboots in recent years, with the streaming explosion. And very few manage to capture whatever appeal was in the original. It really might be better to try something new.
