Firefly reboot on Disney+ rumored

Time to let it go. It’s been 15 years since the movie; almost twice as long as I held out for a Beatles reunion. You don’t want to recast either of those things.

I wouldn’t mind a continuation, or something else set in that 'verse, but to actually reboot it with new actors playing the original characters doesn’t seem to be something that I would like. I would constantly compare it to the original, and would likely find it not measuring up.

A prequel, covering the early days of the colonization could be fun, or even the war for independence. Maybe a continuation with a new generation, Zoe and Walsh’s kid should be in their teens by now.

Even during the brief period the series was out, I wanted to see a Badger spinoff, still kinda do. They could do Badger and Patience, the crime doing duo, I’d watch that.

But, the story of Serenity and her crew has been told, and I don’t think that there is any value to be had in retelling it.

Looking through that site’s backlog, it looks like they push out a lot of BS rumors, so I would take this news with a big old grain of salt.

…huh.

We’ve got:

  1. His wife accuses him of infidelity. He denies it. It’s none of my business.
  2. Some folks who worked on Buffy and Angel say he was a bad boss. Others say he made jokes that weren’t sexually inappropriate or anything, but were like, damn.
  3. He allegedly talked smack about Zack Snyder when the studio called him in to fix Justice League.
  4. Maybe he fired Charisma Carpenter for becoming pregnant? I can’t really tell: certainly her pregnancy became a key part of the character’s story arc, and ultimately her character left the show (so Carpenter was fired). She doesn’t seem to blame him, I think, but the original article linked to is paywalled, so I’m not sure.

On the spectrum between “stand-up guy” and “should be in prison,” he’s not on the “stand-up guy” side of things; but none of these are especially damning in my opinion.

As for Disney+, I’m in the distinct minority that thought Mandalorian was a disappointment. The show is pretty good for sets, costumes, and action sequences; but its dialogue and characterization in Season 1 were for the most part lacking. The conversation between the Storm Troopers at the beginning of the season finale was a shining counterexample. Is season 2 a change, or more of the same?

If Disney handles Firefly in a similar manner, I’d have no interest in it.

Well, damn my feeble memory, anyway. Guess I’ve always been a Star Trek guy.

I agree that none of these accusations, even if 100% true, make Whedon out to be a monster. The worst case scenario is he’s an asshole and there are plenty of those working in Hollywood.

I think the reaction we’re seeing is surprise and disappointment; Whedon’s public image has always been that he’s a nice guy. So finding out this public image isn’t true has upset people more than these same stories would if they were about somebody who they didn’t have higher expectations of.

Lol. The OP answered my question. I only clicked the thread because I just knew Inara wouldn’t be in it.

I liked the original, but I never LOVED it like so many do.

I’d like to see a revisit of Farscape myself.

Well that’s a whole lot of nothing.

From what Cervaise says, we Firefly fans probably don’t have to worry about being disappointed, because the reboot will probably never happen.

You can’t take the sky from me…

I don’t know. I disagree and think it’s more likely to happen than not. Whether or not it’s any good remains to be seen, but there’s already an inherent population of people who would give it a chance just because of the name.

If you didn’t like S1, you almost certainly wouldn’t like S2. It’s got more character development for Mando, but it’s not a lot different from S1, and there’s nothing like that stormtrooper interaction.

I agree with this sentiment, but I’m perfectly content with it being a show about space cowboys shooting lasers at space monsters. If you didn’t like season one, you won’t like season two.

But if you can suspend your disbelief long enough to let the little kid in you squee as a Mandalorian or two or three or four in full armor tears through a bunch of stormtroopers? It’s a damn fine show.

Fair. I think I’ve burnt out on pure action shows; I need my kickassery punctuated by interesting quieter moments. The kickassery was there, but the quiet moments were pretty dull.

The first season of Daredevil is kind of my ideal for that balance. Firefly had it pretty well. Mandalorian just never did, for me.

But like I say, I know I’m in the minority.

I don’t think I’d watch it. I mean, you can’t take this guy from me…

Damn! Exactly what I meant earlier. Gives me a whole new appreciation for buttoned flies.

Excuse me while I kiss this guy…

I agree with Cervaise that this may be much ado about nothing, given how Hollywood works.

For myself, I’d far rather see the still-living original cast come together and see where their characters are now, and what’s happened since the movie, than see a reboot with all the roles recast. But by all means bring in a Chinese actor (or two or three) as part of the main cast; I never liked that the Chinese were supposedly a key part of the Alliance, and they used Chinese phrases all the time, but we saw so few Chinese people on the show.

Nitpick: it’s Wash. But yes, their kid should definitely be part of either a new series with the returning original cast, or a spinoff. Kaylee and Simon might have a mess o’ kids by now, too, as might even Mal and Inara.

Nitpick: it’s k9bfriender.

Oops, right. Thanks.

Yep- something else in the same 'verse is pretty much the only way they can go realistically and hope for actual sustained success.

Personally, I like two ideas- either doing some kind of prequel series like you mention- colonization period/founding of the Alliance, or events leading up to/including the Unification War. But maybe only with tangential references to the Serenity crew, like maybe have someone be Mal’s great uncle or something, and have references to “baby Malcolm” or something like that, without actually making him a character.

The other option would be to continue on in the same time frame, but again, only tangentially related. Maybe someone the Serenity crew knows or something along those lines. Or maybe set it far enough later that most of the original crew has retired, but some might show up in flashbacks or as geezers on occasion.

I think I’d give it a shot, regardless. It’s not like we’re swamped with science-fiction shows these days, and the potential of a relatively big-budget one backed by Disney (or another large network) is enough for me to give it a try.
