If I found a govt. eavesdropping device in my home...

…and destroyed or otherwise interfered with it, would I be subject to prosecution for destroying govt. property? (assuming such eavesdropping had been legally installed according to the proper warrants, etc.)

Doubrful, they would probably just make a point to mention that you were aware of your own criminal activity because you were parinoid enough to go looking for wire taps and that you used sophistaced technology that a normal, law abiding citizen would not have available to them. They would try to make you look like Scarface, an overly parinoid criminal, but not charge you with destroying it.

I hope the OP hasn’t seen “The Conversation”. I would hate to see what his house would look like at the end of his search.

Mayor Street found an FBI listening device in his office last year, during a routine sweep for bugs. He was not charged with anything. In fact, the FBI wasn’t even investigating him. They were investigating various folks in the city treasury, the bureau of licensing and inspections, and the mayor’s staff.

Finding a bug in your home doesn’t mean you’re suspected of anything.

Destroying a bug is rather pointless. Unless you have professionals with serious equipment to sweep your house, there are bound to be more bugs.

It would be more fun to take it apart, and secretly install it in your neighbors house.
