OK, this question came up during Christmas breakfast. Sometimes, when I eat really starchy food such as potatoes or thick steak fries, I get a feeling akin to being punched in the stomach. I can’t swallow or burp unless I drink something, preferably carbonated, to make myself burp. There have been times when it’s happened that I’ve literally ran to the kitchen to get something to drink if I didn’t have one at the table. From what I know of gas, it happens after eating, but this happens during eating. So, if it’s not gas, what is it?
First, IANAD. You could ask your M.D. next checkup.
However, I have had similar symptoms. Turns out I have a slight hiatal hernia. Nothing to worry about.
There can be other causes, such as cramps in the esophagus.
You should probably also be sure to take SMALL bites and chew well before swallowing.
I get this too, with very starchy carbs, especially if I eat too fast. It’s a pain that goes all the way through to my back, and I can barely breathe. At least in my case it’s heartburn, not gas. Going on a low-carb diet helps a lot, and eating more slowly.
