If Kavanaugh gets in and Roe v. Wade is overturned, what do you think that will look like?

I don’t quite see the basis for that second sentence, there, but even if one sees “conservative power-brokers” preserving Roe out of self-interest, they’re not solidly in charge of the Republicans any more, and arguably haven’t been since Gingrich was elected.

Since over 50% of the population is female, I think there will be a significant backlash to this male drive. I predict there will be more women running for political office, a trend which is already in place. Example: our local county board, traditionally a good-ol’ boy bastion, historically never a majority female, now is 43% women.

Isn’t it (sadly) ironic that this is the outcome of laws which purport to make women safer, like requiring operating room upgrades, physician admitting privileges, etc.? If the end justifies the means NOT, someone is being hypocritical.

How possible? Enough to bet $1000 that it will be overturned in the next 5 years? I mean, there will supposedly be the votes the second Kavanaugh gets in. Why wait?

Virginia would immediately overturn the trigger law. As would many other states. I think if you actually overturned Roe v. Wade you would see many of the states that were anti-abortion at the time of Roe would no longer be quite as anti-abortion.

I doubt we will see the bloodbath of dead women and abandoned babies that iiandyii predicts but I think we WILL see an unprecedented surge in Democratic support.

I think the Supreme Court could repeal Roe and if there was a federal law that outlawed abortion they could uphold it.

Just say you are leaving the Lord with an opportunity for a miracle.

Why stop with Roe? If they can stack the court enough, why not go for Miranda?

no ovaries or womb, that would be a heck of a miracle)

Your concern is appreciated, but I’ll live.

Too many prominent members of the current administration in the law enforcement cross hairs

Sure, they’ll probably be facing legal investigations. But they’re working on building up the dual legal system; one system for rich people and one set for not rich people. And the rich people system doesn’t involve things like public defenders, police brutality, capital punishment, and maximum security cells. It’s more geared to concepts like legal teams, appeals, fines, and community service.

Which is one reason I said that I expected that it would be accompanied by a massive effort to suppress the vote of women, to terrorize them into submission, and strip women of their civil rights in general. It would be a huge red flag to the Right that “Now is the time to rape women, to beat them, to kill them”.

I’m expecting that abortions would be legal when accompanied by father’s and/or parent’s notarised permission two months ahead of time, a battery of tests to show that drugs didn’t influence the patient’s mind, repeat visits for counseling, all on the patient’s dime (and which will take at least 6 weeks), the abortion clinic should have at least 5 floors 13 rooms and only 1 main entrance, and be separated from any other medical services, the fetus is certified as unviable and 3rd trimester abortions are illegal.

Why overturn Roe v Wade when you can obtain 95% of the same effect with well sounding conditions ?

You forgot that the clinic also can’t be within 3000 yards of a school, church, synagogue, mosque or Starbuck’s.

Well he did semi-famously manage it at least the once with no penis involved, so don’t count your chickens.

Lemme know, if it shows any brainwave activity. Meanwhile, I’ll be over there, doing other stuff

The main reason overturning Roe would be a boon to the Democrats is because most of the aborted are/were future Democratic voters. Although that effect won’t kick in until 2-3 decades from now.

And no post-menopausal woman could ever marry by that logic.

Wait, what?

B/c about three-quarters of abortion patients are poor/low-income. Although about 40% are white, and poor white people are often not Democratic voters.

Another thing I think Velocity’s overlooked is that the poorest people (and of course, the incarcerated) tend to vote at very low rates, lower than the working poor. So criminalizing abortion could be a boon to Republicans by pushing more families into extreme poverty and off the voting rolls.

Roe Effect.
