If novelties wear off then surely annoyances do also.

If you ever feel down because you know that everything that’s new and pleasurable will eventually become old and ordinary. Remind yourself that the same principle applies to irritations.

JUst thougt I’d throw that one out there. Feel free to share your positive self-advices.

That’s a nice thought, but, for me, it’s just not true. I cannot think of any annoyances which grew less annoying after time. Sorry, I know you requested positives…

For anybody, it’s just not true. By definition, a novelty is new. Nothing is new forever. So novelty is guaranteed to wear off. Annoyances are only guaranteed to wear.

Unfortunately I tend to agree. My OP was wishful thinking. No need to apologise. But others can still (please) provide positives that counter the false-positive falacy of irritants becoming less irritating over time. (If anything they get more irritating)

Oops. Sorry, Lobsang, I didn’t notice the part about “positive”. I’ll just keep moving along.

Here’s my view. I agree that things which are novel must invariably become not-novel. However I don’t agree they become less pleasurable for lack of novelty. Not ALL things, certainly.

Don’t you still like ice cream? Paid vacations? The joy of a good pile-on on the Dope?

Some things are eternally enjoyable.

I’ll transpose ‘ice cream’ with ‘chocolate biscuit’ as I’m not really big on ice-cream anyway…
For me, a chocolate biscuit after two or three months of dieting is about six hundred times more enjoyable than a chocolate biscuit five minutes after a chocolate biscuit which in turn is only 23:55 hours after the one before that. Same goes for a bacon sandwich, or a Burger.

In fact it is quite easy to reach a point where those things are not pleasurable at all.

All things in moderation, including moderation.

Novelties become annoyances.

Annoyances are forever.

I keep my annoyances new by shifting them. That way i don’t get bored

Seriously, I find that the things that used to annoy me when I was younger no longer annoy me, but i’ve acquired a whole bunch of new ones. If you look at them closely, they’re just different manifestation of the same thing(s), though

Mmmmmmm… Ice cream…

some annoyances become less so. I have a 15 month old daughter, so am becoming acquainted with children’s television. Shows such as Lazy Town and Night Garden which use to inspire me to murder have become bearable.

Isn’t this more a matter of developing tolerance to the thing in question? You either learn to block it out or develop a “why bother” approach to it or you kill everyone with/doing it. Either way, it’s taken care of.

As for positive self advice… uh… nope, can’t do it. Sorry.
