If Mitt Romney ran as a third party candidate (or independent) would it help or hurt Trump’s chances?
I think it would depend on the Democratic nominee. If it’s Sanders (or, however unlikely, Warren), Romney would offer an alternative to those who despise Trump and “socialism” equally. But for other Dem candidates, I think his net effect would be to hurt Trump.
It’s an interesting question. On the one hand Clinton did receive votes from more mainstream Republicans, including George Bush Sr. and Barbara Bush. On the other hand, that support was obviously not enough to put her over the top.
No third party or independent candidate, including Romney, stands a chance. If he feels strongly enough about defeating Trump, he should endorse the Democratic nominee. If not then he should endorse Trump. Trying to game the election by running as an independent is more likely to backfire and obscure the meaning of the results (endorsement of the Democratic nominee vs. rejection of Trump) than anything else.
Bloomberg is the true spoiler. He was a Republican up until about a week ago… There’s documentation of racism and misogyny.
Even Warren was a Republican most of her life, and all the others resemble Republicans if you look at their record when it came to the real important votes (Iraq War, trade deals, etc).
Der Mitten already lost a 2-way race. I doubt he wants to certainly lose a 3-way race, even if money is the only cost. Could he and Bloomberg together bribe Tramp to abdicate? That’s the cleanest solution. Tramp loves bribery.
This IS brilliant. My gut tells me that Bloomberg and Romney may have dirt on Trump, and I doubt Trump has anything on them. I don’t think Romney and Bloomberg have any ties to each other financially. Do they? If not, hey, they can just buy him a golf course.
