I love the mach 3, but long for a 5-blade system…
Well Mach V you’ll just have to be happy with a 4 blade razor for the time being. No joke - this was in the Boston Globe Business Section May 8, 2003.
News continues to leak out about a new shaving system from Energizer Holdings Inc.'s Schick subsidiary that will up the blade ante this fall. The new, new thing: A razor with four, count `em four, blades working together.

Am I the only one here using Wilkinson blades?
Certainly not!
I have only used Wilkinson Blades for the past five and a half years. Being double-sided, they last me nearly a week before I consider changing. But then, I do only shape my beard, rather that shave my entire face. Only changing the blade makes it a bit more enviromentally friendly, too. I use soap for shaving, too. It’s very relaxing, oddly enough. Ah, the simple joys of a luddite!
About shaving: years of shaving delicate bits have taught me this: shaving with the growth has a higher risk of leaving stubble, shaving against it increases the risk of ingrown hairs (which can really give people the wrong impression), and electric shavers are as useless as teats on a bull.
I’ve been using variations of the Sensor for years (and before that I’d just swipe the (unused) disposables from my dad and use those) but recently tried a Mach III (came free in the mail) and whoa! That’s what I’m gonna buy from now on. I don’t shave often (and wouldn’t shave at all if I could grow a decent beard) so I’ve only used the Mach III once, but it was SO much better than the Sensor. I don’t know (or really care) about how close of a shave, but it just felt so much better during the actual shave that I can’t go back.
And yes, I’ve found electrics to be worthless, too, though my cousins swear by them.
The two-blade razzor,
It was chic;
The three blade razzzor
is unique;
And I won’t bet a vodka chaser
There isn’t any four-blade razzzzor.
– With apologies to Mr Nash, and after Czarcasm showed me an article about someone working on a four-blade razor. Really.
My turn.
To start, I don’ t like the lubrastrip slime either.
I do like the Sensor excel, but not the regular sensor.
I don’t like the pivot on the Mach III, but I do like the result.
I don’t like the cost of any razors.
I gave up regular shaving 8 years ago (33 now) for a beard, but still have to do the neck parts every couple of days. You can be VERY lax if you have a full beard, as you can always explain you are “moving” the bottom of the beard to a new line, and one must let it grow for a while before deciding a new line location.
I’d start shaving again in an instant (for a little while anyway), but the wife won’t let me shave it off… She’s never seen me without one, and doesn’t have much desire to do so. Although I keep threatening to do it if I’m coming home late from a business trip. (Along with the associated “rub against her cheek” while she’s sleeping, as I creep in to bed in the middle of the night) I don’t do this because she’s a better shot with a rifle than I am, and more inclined to use it!
I’d love to get the gangster/barbershop shave, full with hot towel, hot shaving cream, and a straight blade, but I haven’t won the Megabucks lottery yet. I’ll keep you in the loop if I do.

I’m another Mach III user, and I also use it to shave my head.
From my personal experience, Mach III > Mach III Turbo. I rarely cut my head with the Mach III, but with the Turbo, I get a few cuts every time. I find that odd, considering the fact that the only noticable difference between the two is the strip of lubrication or whatever on the Turbo.
As for other razors: Bics are awful, and I’ve never been shaved with the razors they use at the barber shop. I used to go to one that did before I started shaving my head, but I was too young to have facial hair back then.
I’m female, and I usually use Bic disposables (the ones in the yellow package with purple handls). I had been using the dual-blade dual-strip (some sort of skin conditioner type) until the store only had the same thing but “for sensitive skin”. Interestingly enough, they actually advertise right there on the package “single blade for less irritation and less clogging”. Usually don’t get any nicks from either kind, although last time I guess the blade was dull and I somehow managed to gouge a quarter-inch wide by inch-and-a-quarter long strip out of right above my ankle… the worst part is that’s not the first time!:smack:
One interesting thing, why is it that it seems like all the really cool razor research is for the guys? The newest breakthroughs I’ve seen for women are pastel colors and weird handles. We ladies definitely shave a larger area of our bodies than the men do!
kunoichi- the Venus razor is the Mach 3 equivalent in pastel colors with a funny shaped handle for us ladies. It works extremely well, just like the Mach 3 (apparently) and I have never cut myself with it- back in my old disposable razor days I would always come out bleeding.
I wrote a letter to the local rag a few years ago, pointing out that when twin-blades were introduced the ads showed the first blade pulling the whisker out of the socket a bit then the second one trimming it below skin-level, after which it dropped neatly back.
But when triple-blades were introduced the second blade mysteriously pulled the whisker out even further and now it was the third blade that snicked off the last bit and allowed it to drop back.
So what did they do to the second blade that made it behave so differently?
Space age polymer metals ;D
If that’s not enough, you can now go for the Four-bladed Schick.
Me, I’ll stick to my single-bladed antique straight razor.
As a teenager I knew it was time to start shaving when my barber finished
my haircut and started lathering me up…without asking. Just pulled out a
straight razor and went to it. I couldn’t have had much in the way of fuzz,
but I had walked in a teen…I walked out a man! (We really do have too few
rights of passage anymore.) Shaving at home was fun for maybe a week as
you all know. For those times I really want a good shave, or to treat myself,
I’ll find an old barber pole and an old man with shaky hands and sharp razor.
Seeing how traditional barbershops are dying out (around Middle Georgia at
least) I’d bet some of the girls at MadWhackers could make a mint if they’d
learn to strope a razor.
I shave while sitting in the tub without a mirror (hey, I been shaving since before they invented rocks and dirt, ) I thought the 3 blade was silly until I tried one. Much easier to shave. Maybe even smoother but that’s not verifiable.
My GF uses one to shave her … legs, etc. same results
best regards,
