I’ve tried both the Gillette MACH3 Turbo and the Schick Quattro Razor recently. I figure - more blades, better shave, but I found both lacking. Neither one gave me as close a shave as my old trusty Gillette Sensor Excel that I’ve been using for years. And they just came out with a three blade version which works very well but I don’t know if it gives a better shave than the two blade version.
I don’t know why I get fooled into buying new razors when the one I have works fine. But I’m always looking for something better, that razor at the end of the rainbow.
What do you think of the Mach3 and Quattro? Do you recommend a certain razor? What about shaving cream? I usually pick up a different kind whenever I’m in the market for some but haven’t really found a difference. Actually I’m trying a shaving gel right now and it kinda sucks. I think I’ll stick with cream.
And lastly, I found this website that cryogenically tempers razor blades - Greatrazors.com. They claim that freezing blades at -300F helps keep the blades sharp for up to 7 months. Their prices aren’t really much more than regular prices but I’m not sure if I would ever try it.
I get whatever is cheapest. Also, I don’t use shaving cream. I shave blind at the end of my shower. Sure, it hurts a little bit, but it hurts less than getting up 5 minutes earlier. Also, my skin is very forgiving.
I too get the cheap-as-dirt 12 pack of single blade boring plastic disposable razors, usually store-brand.
I very rarely use shaving cream.
Come on people… can there REALLY be that big a difference? We’re talking microns here… this is facial hair, not surgery.
And if you’ve got sensitive skin… well, guess what. The human body is good at adapting. It will eventually get used to whatever you’re doing to it… including pampering it!
Why, when I was your age we had to shave with rocks. Not even sharp rocks, either; we just rubbed them against our face until the hair was gone. :dubious:
Multiple blades are bullshit, says Cecil. I use a cheap-as-hell single-blade Bic, and I can get a fine shave with that (though it’s not 100% of the time). I do like the flexible necks you tend to get on the multiple-blade razors and they don’t seem to sell normal ones like that. But the number makes no difference.
I don’t know. I’ve tried those cheapy disposable blades and can’t stand 'em. Plus I think buying replacements for my Excel is cheaper in the long run. I can get 5-6 shaves pretty easliy per replacement. I hardly feel that using shaving cream is pampering and I get razor burns if I use the wrong blade. That’s something I never want to get used to. Besides, I live in the 21st century, not the jungle, what’s wrong with a little pampering?
As for Cecil’s article, I’m not one to disagree. In fact I used to own a Wilkinson razor but I can’t find them anymore. I’m not sure if they’re still around.
I’ve pretty much proven to myself that more blades do not equal better shave, I was just curious if anyone else had the same results. I will maintain, however, that not all razors are equal. I’ve tried enough and found that some shave closer than others. I don’t know if it has something to do with the design or what. I find that razors that swivel work better on my beard but the Quattro has some major swiveling going on and didn’t prove to be a better shave.
I’ve tried other razors. I used to use disposables. I’ve used schick it seems to cut my face more than the gilette.
In the end, the mach 3 does a better job for me. I also use shaving cream because my skin not only is not forgiving but seems to have a vendetta against me.
I bought a beard and mustache trimmer 2000 or whatever, and I use the regular attachment without a guard to shave my face. It is great! No razor burn, and it does not hurt at all. Works better than the regular electric razors I have tried, and only cost me about 15 bucks. I will never use a razor again!
I’ve been using the Mach 3 since it came out. There is a definite difference over a single blade disposable. Sometimes I’ll go 2 or 3 days without shaving and the Gillette just glides right along, whereas a cheapie leaves my face looking like the victim of a severe beat down. I went for electric and bought this Norelco. The problem is it takes so long for the skin to adjust and it, along with every single other electric I’ve tried sucks getting the neckline.
Gillette Sensor Handle, Sensor Excel blades. I have a pack of Gillette Sensor excel disposables (had 'em a while, not sure if they’re even sold anymore), and it’s a completely different shave when I use them while travelling. And I don’t mean in a good way. I think that disposable blades are pitched at a bad angle, and they clog WAY to fast to use.
Lessee, I generally use Gillette shaving Gel, and then aloe afterwards (dry skin). Oh, and I switch blades about once a month, I never really learned what the average was.
This is exactly why I use the Mach 3. Sure, the cheapy razor might get as close as the Mach 3, but it looks like I shaved with a weed whacker. The cheap ones don’t have the “power” to go through my stubble and not get snagged, rip out a hair or two (or twenty), and cut my face to shreds.I also use shaving cream (well, gel, technically) but I don’t have loyalty. Sometimes I buy Edge, other times I buy Gilette.
Sensor 3 blade!! Got a free sample with a 2 blade pack and never turned back. Absolutely the best shave I’ve ever had. Was skeptical myself before but now I know better. Gillette Foamy Sensitive Skin shaving cream. And try rinsing the blade in cold water while shaving, keeps the blade sharper.
I use a Gilette triple balde. It works great. I also favor Caswell&Massey sandalwood shaving cream-it comes from a tube, and you have to spend a few minutes lathering up-but I get a great close shave (no nicks), and I don’t have to shave the next day!
I have a beard these days, so I just shave my neck, cheeks, and chin. I usually buy the cheapest of the cheap disposable razors (an 8-pack from the dollar store) and proceed to cut the hell out of my neck. When I used to shave my whole face except a goatee on my chin, I used to really do a number on myself with them, especially since I tend to reuse the disposables 3 or 4 times.
I do, however, need to replace my electric beard trimmer, which finally died. Can anyone recommend one of those?
By the way, my all-time favorite shave ever was getting an old-fashioned shave at the barber shop, with the hot towel, hot foam, and a straight razor. I loved that!
I occasionally use a [Wilkinson Sword] Quattro that was handed to me free at Paddington station one day. But the bloke who designed it was either (a) a woman or (b) never actually used one to shave. The blade release button is precisely where I hold my thumb on it.
My razor of choice is still the Gillette Mach III. But at the age of 45, having been shaving seriously since I was 13 (I was a really hairy child), I have never been able to shave without drawing blood nor have I ever managed to shave properly that effing patch of about an inch square under my chin…
How long will it be before some twat brings out a 5-bladed razor?
Mach3 Turbo for me, and it does an adequate job while being pretty comfortable. I find I cut myself less with it, though I agree it doesn’t do as good a job as the Sensor. My beard goes down my neck a bit, and when I get a nick in that area, it can bleed for freaking hours. I just can’t afford to wait around for clotting during the morning rush, so M3T it is.
For years, I would try every new razor. They were never any better than the cheapo Bic disposable. Ah, but then the Gillette Sensor Excel came along. That’s my razor. It rarely cuts me, and there is very little drag. I like the pivoting blade’s tracking around my chin.
Edge gel, by the way.
My wife likes the Gillette Mach 3 just fine for her legs.
