If you already fucking know everything, then why did you fucking ask?

People who claim to want to learn something and then won’t listen drive me shitbats. If you want to learn something new, then maybe, just maybe, you have to open your mind to the possibility that you don’t already know everything. shock You could actually be wrong in some of your assumptions.

Mort asked about the relevance of classical music over in Cafe Society, stating that it meant nothing to him and he wasn’t sure why. A bunch of kind people took the time to explain their experiences with various pieces and what the music meant to them. Lovely essays ensued.

Mort then proceeds to argue against all of their premises about what makes music relevant - his own criteria are apparently impeccable. I don’t know if he was just being obstinant, or trolling, or maybe the whole thing was a parody (that AC/DC striptease was a bit farfetched). Never did he grant that someone else’s view had caused him to re-think his own. He might be a nice guy, I don’t know, but I don’t think he really came there to learn at all - all he did is restate his view over and over. His view wasn’t the point, though - the point was that there are other views, which lead to other experiences.

The point of learning is to realize the limits you’ve created for yourself, and remove them.

You’ve met my roommate eh?

[sub]he’s not Mort[/sub]

Ah, I know how you feel. My personal pet peeve is when people ask my advice, proceed to ignore it, fuck up their lives and THEN finally do what I told them to in the first place.

That bothers you? Just treat it as the ultimate “Ha Ha! I was right all along” moment.

Let me guess: you’ve never raised a teenager…

God, no. I’m not responsible enough for houseplants, let alone kids.

Any satisfaction I get from them screwing up their lives is negated by the fact that I probably have to help them sort out the carnage…

Was he trying to figure out why Other people enjoyed classical music? Or was he just trying to justify why he didn’t like it?

What I hate worse is when people ask my advice, then shoot down every possible solution I offer. Then why did you ask me?

Nothing pisses me off more then when answering a question they finish my sentences off for me.

CanvasShoes (Howdy!) He claims to want to know, but I think he just wants to argue - keeps throwing out pop music references, which no one bothers to challenge him on (much). I think most of us agree it’s not necessary to trash one kind of music in order to support another (plus nearly everyone likes a range of stuff), but I get the feeling that’s the kind of response he wanted.

Here’s part of his gibberish - I didn’t snip it b/c it rambles on - he keeps arguing for and against the same statement (and the suggestions to which he refers are some of the easiest-to-like works in the world, requiring no explanation):

(sorry I don’t know how to make a pretty link):

I think this clown’s just messing w/people & has no intention of learning to like something about which he is ignorant. Plus he keeps ignoring my posts - that in itself is enough to make him a grade-A asshat.

Thanks fessie, me either (regarding the “cool” links, someone showed me once, but I didn’t paste it into a “library” and forgot how).

He sounds like a doofus, he’s trying to argue taste, but is trying to sound intellectual about it. And at the same time trying to “push” that his kind of music is better.

I don’t care for classical either (but at least I tried it, I played an instrument from 6th grade through HS pep band), but I don’t go around trying to cram Metallica music down people’s throats in it’s stead.

Granted, I didn’t read his whole post, but that’s the gist I get from him.

To me, it came across as more of an argument as to why it is logically impossible for modern man to enjoy classical music, but I think I may have read a little too much into it.

Here’s how to do “cool” links:

HA-ha!

I took the “tune-deafness” test posted on the first page of the thread in question and posted my findings. Methinks you have some apologizing to do, fessie.

As I posted in that thread (that you chose to ignore  ), I don’t think he’s trying to be an ass – I think he just learned to listen to music in a different way than most other people. I really think he’s trying to understand, but doesn’t have the tools to do so.

As to your OP, except for slamming Mort, I wholeheartedly agree.

Well fine, if he’s tune deaf there’s nothing to be done. You’ll note he posted his findings at 8:42 p.m., a full hour and a half after the exchange that led to my opening of this rant. Hats off to you folks for doing the investigative work.

I certainly wouldn’t want to pick on someone for something they couldn’t help - I’m sure if there was a test for algebra-deafness I’d be found deficient myself.

Perhaps I let my fuse run too short too fast - I apologize for my hasty anger. As alluded to previously, this issue of inability to understand hits home for me in a few different ways.

I still think he oughta read that “Zen for Assholes” article.

Thanks Q.E.D., I dutifully created a “coding library” and pasted it in there this time!!!

While some people apparently think my DVD thread falls into this category, I think ThoughtPolice produced the canonical example.

He asks what the name of God is (in Great Debates, no less). A few answers later, he returns saying

No cites, obviously, just this blatant statement of fact, from the guy who asked the question in the first place.

Later on, he says that

One wonders why he asked in the first place…

Nah! house plants are harder than kids. Kids can get their own drinks. House plants just sit there and wither.
