Assuming you work a forty hour work week, what times would you choose to go in if it were up to you? And what days?
Also if you’d prefer you could work four 10hour days if you wanted. As long as it adds up to forty hours a week. Would you compact your days as well; so you could have a longer weekend?
I can work whatever hours I want, and I generally work from 7 to 3 or 8 to 4. Not all that different than a normal workweek.
I’ve done different things, but in general, the 8 hour day works for me, and I don’t like working on weekends. I do on occasion take time off in the afternoons if it’s a nice day, then work later into the night. But I’m a creature of habit, and I like being done before 5.
Sunday through Thursday, 6 PM - 2 AM. I worked a Mon-Fri shift with those hours once, and I loved it. The only problem was driving in to work on Friday evening as the radio DJs and jabbering about starting the weekend and you’ve still got a full day ahead of you.
I actually did choose my own hours, and before I was forced by my failing body to drop down to 30 hours a week recently I worked 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. (Sunday night to Thursday morning ). Now I don’t start until midnight.
My first job was a night job, 4 weeknights, and it fit in with my partying lifestyle so well back then that I have always preferred to work nights. Working days makes me disgruntled.
Weekdays -
Work from 10 am -noonish at the home office.
work from 1 pm or 2 pm to 5 or 6 at ‘downtown’ office.
Work from 7ish to 9 or 10 pm at home office.
Weekends -
work from 10 am - 10 pm off and on at home office, with breaks for errands, housework, site visits, 'net surfing etc.
I think weekly hours worked varies from 20 hours to 80 hours. Perhaps it averages out to 40 hours in the end.
The best shift I ever worked was 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. It was fantastic! I got more work “produced” in four 10-hour days than I ever did in five 8-hour days, I had 3-day weekends and it was just plain wonderful.
Unfortunately, we had to give it up because the peasant mentality of some of my fellow workers could not allow them to believe they weren’t getting screwed over somehow. (They were working 10 hours a day, for heaven’s sake! How could they NOT get paid overtime?!)
When I was consulting years ago a typical day would be:
10:00 to 11:30
break for lunch
1:00 - 3:00
break for nap
3:30 to 7
break for social
10:00 PM to 2:00 AM
break for sleep
Usually a 10 hour day or so, but broken up. Of course, I also worked usually 7 days a week. But that was a great life. I would easily go back to something like that.
At my old job, I worked Monday through Thursday 9 - 7. I really liked that; the three day weekend was pretty nice.
Currently I work 10 - 6, Monday to Friday, and this shift isn’t all that bad as it allows me to sleep in until 9 or so and I’m still out by a reasonable time.
My hours are somewhat flexible and I’m currently working my ideal schedule: 9:30am or 10:00am to about 6pm, Monday through Friday. I don’t want to work four long days as I’m pretty busy after work everyday.
I occasionally work from home, and then my day seems to break down as follows:
11am - 2pm - general slog, doing all the basic stuff I have to do.
2 - 3.30pm - break for lunch and general pottering.
3.30pm - 9ish - all the stuff that requires creative energy, ideas, and brain power.
It seems to suit me far better than my normal working day in the office (9.30 - 6.30, half and hour for lunch, eaten at my desk, if I’m lucky), and I’m much more productive.
I worked 4 and 10 for about a year and a half. It was 7:30 to 6 with a ½ hour lunch. It was great. I would do it again. The days of the week don’t matter so much. I had to change the day each semester anyway. Naturally Monday or Friday + Saturday and Sunday creates a nice weekend, but having a day in the middle of the week was nice too. One of the best parts was being able to go shopping or work out at off times.
Actually I can’t really think of a better schedule, considering my work.
Real life won’t allow this because of family and kids, but my perfect schedule would be 11 AM - 7 PM, 5 days a week (Sun-Thurs, but that’s just because it’s how things are done here. If I were in the US I’d say Mon-Fri)
I keep staying up late because I can’t get to sleep before 1 AM or so, and having to get up early I’m pretty much tired all the time.
There’s a joke about how being self-employed is great because you get to work only half days, AND you get to pick which 12 hours you work every day. THat’s not too far off the mark in my case.
I think if I had to designate my hours and limit them to 40/wk, I’d go for 10 hrs/4 days a week too. Mr. S was on that once and it was pretty sweet. I hate getting up to an alarm and I’m a night owl, so I suppose I’d pick 9-7 or 10-8, something like that.
Then again, hmm . . . it’s nice to hit a midweek movie or dinner now and then, so maybe I’d go with good old 9-5, M-F.
Oh, what the hell am I doing in this thread anyway? I already DO pick my own hours. I just overbook myself all the time, so I’m usually just working too many of them to really pick when I work; I’m just always working. Or thinking about how I should be working. Like right now, for example . . .
