My next dog will either be a Anatolian Shepherd, Neapolitan Mastiff or a Clumber Spaniel. Which I choose to get will depend on where I’m at in my life when im ready for my next dog.
Right now I’m leaning towards the clumber since I’d like to get back in bird hunting but training a good hunting dog is a full time job for three years plus the time spent going hunting. Right now I don’t have enought time to do it right or even hunt more then once a year.
My mastiff is only 2.5 years old and I don’t think I could handel more then one 200+ lb dog at a time so unless something terrible happens to him I don’t think I’ll be ready for a Neo for at least a decade.
Anatolians are the perfect dog in my opinion, at least based on my current one. If my life doesn’t change much before we’re ready for a 3rd dog that is what we’ll probably get. They are protective, calm, independent, and match their energy level to their owners.
Price and availability and even room (obviously) are not really the problem. The problem is my lease says I can’t have a dog. Even if I could, I wouldn’t want one here. I am not of the dogwalking philosophy of dog ownership; all my dogs have been “let out in the backyard to to their business” dogs, and the yard here isn’t secure.
A retriever, either a golden or a Labrador. I have had both and my current mutt is a Lab. Both breeds are gentle, good-natured, obedient, and easy to train. I’m really a sucker for black Labs, though. I’d probably take a Lab over a golden because they’re easier to keep groomed.
I’m allergic to dogs, so I can’t have one in my home. But if I could, it’d be a female golden. One neighbor had one, and she let me play with her. Wonderful, playful, really nice dog.
Do I have to choose one before meeting the dog? Any shepherd breed. The bestest dog ever was my uncle’s GSD, but it just seems to me like the best-trained, nicest dogs I meet are either shepherd breeds or sailor breeds. I guess I should go for a Spanish water dog, they’re both of the above and they’re local
Note that this is actually on paper: if (big if) I ever get a dog, it will be from the pound/rescue, so the most likely breed will be “dog” and he or she will be neutered.
I’ve got two mini schnauzers…they’re both morons.
Anyways, any dog, no 'I’d love to have a _, but" type things, then I’d go with one of those dogs that’s just stupidly big. Great Dane, Irish Wolfhound, Newfie etc. I’ve even had my eye on an Akita, Siberian Husky or Malamute.
I should probably point out that I know nothing about any of those dogs other than what they look like, they’re just dogs that I’ve thought to myself 'hey, look at that _____, I want one".
In reality, my next dog will probably end up being a Labradoodle or Wheaton Terrier.
