One of the most notable dogs that I have ever known was when I lived in New Orleans. I worked at a semi-famous bed and breakfast type place (the Columns Hotel) that had a handyman that lived in the attic with is dog Onyx. Now Onyx was no ordinary dog. He was half Great Dane and half Rottweiler and had the size of a Great Dane but the build and general look of a Rottweiler. He was stunningly huge and beautiful. The walls resonated whenever he came into the ballroom and causally barked in way way I have never witnessed before or since.
Now Peter, his owner, was a generally good guy despite being a convicted felon but he was also a very herterosexual transvestite and he made sure that Onyx was too. Onyx not only had custom made leather studded collars but also little tutus and dresses that he wore to match Peter’s choice of outfits on any given day. It always attracted tons of attention on St. Charles Avenue and I am sure that is a big part of the reason that Peter did it.
I got to supervise Onyx a few times in the hotel and I always felt like a celebrity due to the attention he attracted. He was very sweet but he would go wherever he wanted on a leash and they was little you could do about it.
