If you could magically eliminate one thing from earth…

I was tempted to say ticks or mosquitoes or something, but nah. Generative AI, or vertical video.

Because I don’t want to stomp on anyone’s Faith, it’s very important to them and can be key to them being decent folk. Whereas Organised Religion is a dangerous scam responsible for the worst events throughout history.

St. Jude’s Commercials

There’s a way to get rid of those.
Magically. Make an appointment with the dentist tell them to knock you out. You’ll magically wake up with no teeth. Then you’ll have other problems to replace the bad teeth.

That’s how it goes, get rid of one problem you’ll acquire 3 more.

That’s what my ol’ Granny always said.
I think she just let her teeth fall out, proudly saying she had never been to a dentist. In her late eighties.
(She might’ve pulled a couple herself, she was tough as nails)

I think @XOldiesJock nailed it early in the thread: Hate.

Although, a world without hate might have some unforeseen side effects.

Broken Air Conditioners

Love it.

“Sonder” Definition — noun. the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own — populated with their own ambitions, friends, routines, worries and inherited craziness

There would be a lot less bias, if there was more Sonder.

Trump.

Was thinking this:

TIL what a craisin is !

How about eliminating 40% of the human population? Let’s trim the fat, starting with the worst of the bunch—murderers, rapists, thieves, and people who cut me off in traffic. This would certainly make for a more pleasant world for the rest of us good folks. Think about it: less crime, less traffic congestion, and more room on the beach.

But more importantly, this would be a boon for the animals, the environment, and the biosphere as a whole. With fewer humans messing things up, and assuming we stick to pro-environmental policies, we’d be taking a significant step toward avoiding or delaying the worst of the Holocene extinction.

Sure, a 40% population reduction would cause some serious economic and social upheaval. But hey, we’re resilient—we’d recover. And let’s be honest, the animals wouldn’t care either way. In fact, they’d probably throw a party.

Winner.

For a second, I thought you meant winter, which I would be on board with.

Rape/molestation/abuse. Whatever single word or concept sums up those things.

Can I get a 3-fer and make my one thing “blood-sucking bugs”, eliminating all three?

DIsco.

And if I lived anywhere else, I’d add mosquitoes. I hate those things

I see this as a good call. Without nukes, NATO would annihilate Russia’s military within a few weeks, just absolutely eliminate their ability to project force. A demilitarized Russia would be an unambiguous good thing for humanity.

Our whole-house AC broke after 23 years. A new unit was installed yesterday. $7K. :pensive:

For many millenia religion likely acted as a glue to hold society together. Yeah, you had your Inquisitions and Crusades and such, but whenever someone posits the above they NEVER bother to explain what other societal organization and body of norms would have replaced it in that function, across many thousands of years and innumerable cultures, so as to get us to an equivalent point today. You can’t simply drop modern philosophies (as in a time-traveling philosopher maybe) into the Mongol, Egyptian, or Roman Empires and expect everyone to suddenly forgo all of that.

Yeah, in the 21st century it (as in mythic religion) has certainly overstayed its welcome, and among most modern secular societies it has seen a steady decline over the past half century+, so said process appears to finally be in motion, precisely because the conditions for it to finally fade only recently came into play. In any event there are extensive readings on this topic and since this is IMHO and not GD I’ll stop there.

Am I the first to choose the internet? No internet or anything similar.
