I’ve thought about this and what I’d do. I certainly wouldn’t want to look like an ass in front of the viewing audience, but I know if I won, I’d definitely get my money or if I lost I wouldn’t have to pay it.
Plus they’ll fly me out to LA and I can take in some sights.
If I had a small claims issue and the opportunity to take it to one of the court TV shows, it’d be The People’s Court all the way.
From what I’ve seen, Judge Judy isn’t much for proper courtroom procedures. Yes, I know these are arbitrations rather than legal courts, so strict procedures don’t matter all that much, but at least TPC is a bit more edumacational for the viewers as to how an actual court operates.
I’d go with one of the male judges – Mathis or Young. Judge Judy and Judge Milian yell too much. They’re entertaining though. I love that lace collar Judy wears.
I just started watching the court shows this summer, when I’m quilting in the next room. (God forbid I’d admit to watching daytime TV for anything but the noise factor.) I’ve seen a few shows that look like set-ups – people who faked a case for the free trip, or to get on TV. One in particular – a woman sued her father for emotional distress. They had connected over the phone after having no relationship at all – the dad hadn’t known of his daughter’s existence. After a few months of friendly phone calls and letters, dad suddenly refused to talk to her, hence the emotional distress. They lived in different states, and going on the show meant that they could meet without buying a plane ticket.
A few other cases have been between relatives with cockamamie claims for property damage. Let The People’s Court pay for the repairs, I guess.
I wouldn’t, out of respect for the law more than anything. I think anyone involved with those shows should be disbarred. OK, maybe that is a bit extreme, but it turns my stomach.
