Assuming you had the money that allowed you to move anywhere in the world - where would you move?
Same city/town, but bigger house?
New city/town?
New state?
Different country?
I think I would probably keep my main residence here in Las Vegas - I love the heat in the summer and I like living here.
That said, I would be torn with moving to NYC, or Malibu, or Lugano, Switzerland, or back to Berlin…then again, there are some nice islands that could be fun.
Still, main residence right here in Las Vegas - and I have seen a few homes here for “only” about $5 million that would be nice.
Same exact house I’m living in now (I rent). I’d buy it and add a master suite & use the three existing bedrooms as guest rooms/study. I’d also add a breakfast room & enlarge the kitchen.
I’d actually research my house (built in 1927) and try to restore as closely as possible to it’s original appearance. I’d also buy a place in Belize for the winters. The rest of the money I’d probably just piss away on all kinds of toys.
I’d keep a property in the UK - an old country house in Oxfordshire most likely. Probably get a pied-a-terre in London and one in Dublin too. A nice place in the south of France. And then I’d go to Thailand and try to buy an island. It would also be nice to help out in my grandmother’s birthplace of Dominica - the poorest of the Caribbean islands - with an infrastructure project or something.
The one thing I wouldn’t want, is too much house. I don’t understand people like the Spellings with 170-room mansions. What’s the point? My room, a study, three or four guestrooms, living room, kitchen/diner, bada bing. That’s almost what I’ve got already, too.
I would actually stay in the same house I am in now. The neighborhood is nice, the people are nice, very low crime rate. I really DO NOT WANT a bigger house. There are a lot of mansions in the city I live in, but I can not see being that spread out from my family. I have the perfect size house now, where I can say someones name, no matter where I am, and they all hear me.
With that being said, I might consider buying a condo in a high rise, on the beach. As a weekend getaway and/or to let friends use while they are visiting.
If it happened while my kid is still in school, I’d buy a bigger house in our town. There are some really major mansions, so one of those. Maybe the one that Bill Clinton visited the time his helicopters were parked in the field hockey field at the high school would be nice for me.
If it happened after my kid graduates, I’d move to a nice old but fully restored farm house in a slightly rural area (this is RI so there’s not REALLY rural area) and raise some sort of small purebreed dogs.
Small farm in Ireland
Small farm in Seedro Wooley, Washington
Condo overlooking Petco Park in San Diego
Apartment in London
Working ranch in Montana
Condo on the Strip in Vegas
Then split our time between them depending on whim. That will set us back $50 mill or so. Use the rest for travel costs, etc.
I’d buy somewhere nice in Italy, but wouldn’t bother with property in London or NYC (maybe as investments, though). I’m sure that I’d find nice hotels there to cater for my every whim.
I’d stay right here, but I’d pay off the mortgage and maybe buy the house behind me - the original parcel of land my house was built on included that piece, but it was later split off and I don’t like how close that house is to my place. Then I’d build a nice garage after I bought off the Historical Comission and renovate the kitchen. Replace the windows, maybe. In other words, I love my house, love where I live. I might buy some of the nearby ghetto and nice it up, though.
If I had $100,000,000 I would stay in the town I am now and possibly build a family compound with at least 10 acres and multiple houses and a very large heated garage and workshop. I would then invite family members to move in.
The entire place would run on Solar & Wind Power. I would use Geothermal for heating and cooling.
I like the basic layout of my current house; I would make it a little larger and have larger closets. I would have to have a dedicated library with a secret room behind it that led to the basement or attic, just because I could. The garage would need to be attached, probably through mudroom. My wife will want an open kitchen and dining Room that with doors leading to a nice enclosed Porch. I will want a cleaning service to come in and do most of the cleaning. Maybe we would just hire a live in house cleaner/cook. We might break down and raise horses and goats. If I got a pool, it would have to be a covered pool with solar heating.
I would also have an apartment near Yankee Stadium to go with a complete season ticket package I would have to buy. I would visit the other places I love like Scotland more often.
I would spend most of my time traveling, working for the environmental movement and woodworking. I would enjoy myself.
I’d stay right where I’m at, too. Enlarge the house by taking over more of the backyard (got lots of room to do this), make a personal reference library, and invest the remainder to cover things like maintenance, money to help my friends out when they need it, and probably trips around the country and overseas.
My husband and I have been fantasizing about this for years. We’d have our dream house built on a good sized piece of land not far from where we are. I want a dumb waiter, laundry shute, walk-in pantry, professional kitchen, big porch, etc.
As soon as that house is livable, we’d move into it & remodel our current house; adding on rooms to raise it’s worth considerably. We’d leave it lavishly furnished. Then, we’d hand pick buyers with lots of rowdy, wild children, loud beat up cars and other unsavory traits. We’d totally undersell this house, for say, $40 thousand. Just to piss the asshole neighbors off.
During the baseball season I’d be in my building that overlooks Wrigley Field, during the football season I’d still be in that building, but also following the Bears to every single game staying in the nicest hotels in those cities. For those times between seasons, I’d be just traveling.
I’d stay here in town, but I’d move. I’d buy a big lot and build a nice house. Not a mansion, but 5 bedrooms, perhaps. Maybe I’d buy a mansion for my parents, though
I’d finally be able to force my mother to move off the family farm so my husband and I can live there. Sounds mean, but what does a single 61-year-old need with a six-bedroom farmhouse she can’t take care of? With that kind of cash, we could put all new windows in, build a garage, and do some other needed repairs. I’d also be able to buy my mom a nice house in town so she wouldn’t have to worry about making payments or driving to work in the winter. We’d also have a lake home in northern Minnesota where we’d spend the summers, and possibly a vacation home in Florida where my husband grew up.
We would stay here in LA. I’d buy one of the estates up in the hollywood hills. That way I can have the quiet of being away from the city noise, but we’re close enough that he can hop down the hill into west hollywood for the nightclubs and such. It’d be a win/win.
