Tuscany … with Diane Lane
I might try to buy this apartment.
That is a NYTimes link.
16 rooms, 5 fireplaces and a ballroom, penthouse triplex atop the Hotel Pierre.
Asking price? 70 million dollars. (you will have an annual mantainence fee of about half a million a year)
This sets a record for NYC real estate.
I’d split my time between NYC and Paris.
I’d buy a nice house or flat in central London and retire.
The west coast of Scotland- probably Gairloch.
I’d buy a big chunk of land in the Willamette Valley somewhere–Molalla/Mulino or maybe southern Oregon. Good sized house but nothing fancy, ideal would be to buy an existing vintage farmhouse or move one onto the property and fully renovate. Couple of guesthouses here and there out of sight of the main house. Top floor of the barn would be a good sized apartment for a caretaker–someone to keep track of the critters when we’re gone. Solar/wind/hydroelectric power generation on the premises, preferably completely off the grid. I’d keep a pack of dogs, a herd of cats and any other creature I feel like having around.
I wouldn’t bother with any other permanent home, because it’s so much more fun to stay in different places while travelling, which I would do a LOT.
I’d keep my current house (but renovate the kitchen and bathrooms). I’d buy a flat in London – nothing too extravagant, but a place where I could go with a couple friends for a long weekend. And maybe a little place in Cabo San Lucas, for when the southern California winter gets too cold (or the southern California summer gets too gray).
But, really: I can’t even wrap my head around that kind of money. So while I’d love to have places in Umbria and Ireland and London and Mexico, I’d probably just stay right here and pop for a new fridge or something.
I’d buy a decent place in Silicon Valley, Bay Area, CA. When is the money arriving?
I would buy a nice home somewhere here in middle TN, but my big splurge would be this place…

I’ve wanted Dark Island since I first saw it for sale, years ago. sigh
That better be one hell of a fridge!
I’d buy a house in Baltimore for my brother and his family with a nice guest room - that would take of family visits. I’d buy a place near Lake Tahoe for skiing and visiting the friends I have here. Then I’d buy a cabin on a lake somewhere in the backwoods of Montana/Wyoming/Idaho and disappear. It’s been nice knowing you all…
I’d buy a larger house here in Georgia so I could stay close to friends and family. I would have several other residences though.
I’m thinking:
Log cabin in Wyoming out in the middle of nowhere that I could go to be alone and catch up on some reading.
Apartment in Manhattan for when I felt like partying in a big city.
And maybe a place somewhere in Europe thought not sure where, that I could use and then travel to other nearby countries.
A nice place near Las Cruces, New Mexico for my darling Marcie.
A house on the beach somewhere in SouthWest Florida for me.
A place in Hell for my ex.
Penthouse on Sydney Harbour, another one in Hong Kong, a few zillion acres with a shack on it in the outback, possibly on the Nullabor Plain where I can be close to some brooding, grey Southern Ocean - no neighbours for hundreds of miles.
Stocked with naked playboy bunnies. Ah, the life of Hugh Hefner. It’s a dream I have <sigh>.
Otherwise, I’d split my time between Hong Kong, Vancouver area (family reasons), and most likely, London.
Allenhurst, NJ (or Deal, NJ as I’m not picky) for the summers and fall, preferrably on the ocean or REALLY close to it. Winters are to be spent in Brazil, in a house that has a courtyard in the middle with a fountain. And a pool. And enough property around it that I don’t have to worry about seeing if someone is coming over the fence.
I would find a large plot of land bordering on Smoky Mountain National Park, build my mansion there, and have the park for my back yard. I would erect a mansion of stone, built to last a thousand years. A man needs a legacy.
If I were to have a vacation home, I think Spain and Ireland would be the leading contenders. I love both of those places. If Spain, maybeSeville or Salamanca, or perhaps somewhere on the Costa del Sol. If Ireland, maybe Galway or Dingle, or out on the Aran Islands.
Also, it might be nice to have a private beach house somewhere in the Caribbean or the Gulf of Mexico.
I’d have a house in the Bay Area near where I live now, where I can walk to grocery stores and restaurants. Or maybe I’d buy a house in Berkeley, near where Mr. Neville used to live, and put in central air conditioning. I know you don’t need it 360 days out of the year, but those five days when you need it and don’t have it are misery.
I’d also buy a house in Australia, probably in Sydney, ideally in a neighborhood similar to the one where I live now, where I could walk to shops, pubs, and restaurants.
I would spend half the year in California and the other half in Australia, and never deal with early sunsets (like we’re having now) again. I might come back to the Bay Area for Hanukkah, because I’m told that lighting the menorah after sunset at 8pm is a little weird.
100,00,000 scoots? After taxes, I presume?
I’d fix up our house: foundation repair, remodeling, etc.
Then we’d travel all over the place.
First I’d buy the family homestead from my mom and get her a nice place in Gerogia where she dreams of living. I would spend some money on remodeling the old farm but it wouldn’t be an immediate concern. I would then go about buying out every home and business in the village about a mile away, demolish some of the tacky buildings that have sprung up in the last 30 years and restore the remaining old buildings.
I would rebuild the entire village and create a new central business district. I would resell the properties at a loss. Then I would build a public library and open up a privately-funded community college. I would open up a manufacturing plant where I would build motorbikes. I would stand back and watch my real-life game of sim-city grow and develop.
And I’d probably have a place in the city too so that I could get away every now and then.
Pistakee is the money lake
I’d love a cozy condo at a ski slope. Snowmass, maybe. A fun place in Chicago would be nice too.
