If you know Kansas City, where was I?

July 1986. I was driving through Kansas City one evening on I-70. I needed to get gas and pulled off at an exit. As I remember (and my memory may not be 100 percent accurate)…
There were no gas stations near the exit. I went north and when it didn’t look promising, I went left.
I saw what I thought was prostitutes and realized I was where I didn’t want to be. I went back toward I-70. I think I went over I-70 to the south side.
I saw a store for adult entertainment (with a sleezy feel), so I’m still not where I want to be.
I finally found a gas station, but it had scary people hanging around and they had bars to protect the gas station employee. If it wasn’t safe for him, it’s not safe for me, so I went on.
I continued east, and crossed railroad tracks. There was an immediate improvement. I found a “regular” gas station, filled up and went on my way.

Based on this, do you know where I was?

Why does it matter and why would you or anyone else care? You were in KC in a random place 33 years ago.

It was Friday, July 11, 1986.
I don’t expect anyone else to care. There aren’t too many things from 20+ years ago where I know a specific date that it happened. There is some significance to me.

This is the kind of question where a more specialized forum might be appropriate, so follow this thread:

Yay… I’m pretty sure I found my answer. Thank you. I guess it helps to know the best place to go.
