If You Like Realistic Paintings...

Here’s an artist you might want to know about.

Shane Wolf

He was my friend’s pupil a few years ago. Now he’s working and teaching in Paris. I think he’s absolutely amazing.

Thanks for sharing that – his work is gorgeous! Some of it reminds me of John Singer Sargent.

I’m not usually a big fan of realism, but those are wonderful. I’d love to see his work in person.

“Why, yes, I like Realistic Paint…HOLY SHIT!!!”

His skill level is amazing. Another artist to check out for realism is Robert Sherer (who was my Painting II instructor). His stuff is incredible. He has a series called “bloodworks” that are actually drawn in blood. Some of it HIV positive, I think. But regardless, his work is just mind blowing.

I’m neither a fan of still life nor realistic paintings, but Shane Wolf’s work is exquisite. Thanks fessie.

Those are truly amazing. The portraits in particular are spectacular.

Very nice.

FYI, here’s the most realistic painting of a person I’ve seen. Even though I know it’s a painting, it’s really hard to not see it as a photo.

Also, some more interesting photo-realistic stuff. I like images 3 & 10 on that page

I DON’T like realistic paintings, but I have to admire the skill in those.

I’m going to have to express some skepticism on this one.

Agreed. But I haven’t been able to find any indication on the web that he is faking it.

His work seems to have been on a magazine cover, but of course, that may be a fake as well. On the other hand, the magazine seems to exist, and the November 2008 edition has another one of this artist’s work on the cover.

it’s just not that hard to fake that kind of thing, and corporate bigwigs don’t have the tech savvy to know the difference.

Here’s a discussion on snopes’ message board about whether it is fake. They reach no conclusion, but many doubt it.

An interesting post in that thread mentions:

Personally, looking at the big version of the image, it’s really hard to accept that it is not a photo.

Fuck. Just…fuck!

I’m glad I don’t work in photorealism, 'cos I’d have to toss my brushes after seeing those…

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM…

Pure visual candy! I LOVE those kinds of paintings, which let genuine talent shine through.

Thanks for sharing this with us.
(P.S.: Hi fessie! ::: waves hand from afar ::: )

That is really amazing, really beautiful work. Frankly, I didn’t know people still painted like that anymore.

Great stuff!

One of the main frustrations with painting is the size of detail you can put in. Your brush can only be so small. But assuming that he some how perfectly rendered skin texture, you have to look at the hair, specifically the hair that overlaps the white background. That blue-grey blury effect is far more characteristic of a Photoshop selection than air brushing. If someone is using such fine brushes to create the skin texture, it should be no problem at all to get a fine edge on the hair.

Also, his “progress” shots are kinda stupid too. He blocked in the cheeks, than BOOM, face.

But yea, I’ll leave open the possibility that it’s a painting, because I have no trouble assuming someone knows every trick in the book to make something look like a photograph. There’s a lot more to art than replication.

Shane Wolf’s work is amazing!

Thanks for sharing.

I’m still out on whether the Tica picture is real or what. It if is real, why isn’t this artist’s name a household or collector’s dream?

It’s pretty easy for him to quiet the nay-sayers. He can paint it in front of a camera or in front of real people. It wouldn’t take long for him to establish his abilities on a particular area of the painting. Actually, 70 hours seems way too short for that kind of detail work. However, I’ve been surprised before.

I’m also not a big fan of realism. It lacks imagination. There’s not much in the way of a window into the artist.
