Exactly the same for me. Saw that clue and then solved in the same order as you. Less than a minute.

1982

I think the constructor probably comes up with the red herring first. Come up with four things that could be a category, like TV services (PEACOCK, DISCOVERY, SMITHSONIAN, and something else). Then build each of them into a category of its own, like birds, space shuttles, and museums.

Space shuttles might be a good red herring. Pick four of ENTERPRISE, ATLANTIS, COLUMBIA, DISCOVERY, CHALLENGER, ENDEAVOUR; from that you could make categories like fictional lands and movie studios.
