Good red herring today; it almost got me but I figured it out before wasting a guess.

Did see the red herring but somehow missed the fourth one then got yellow. Knew the answer to green but had to cheat and google it to see which ones were actually in the category and never got purple.
The red herring definitely got me today Beans!
Me too.

They are synonyms. For some reason, I can’t blur text today, but see Merriam-Webster.

Glad to see I wasn’t alone!
I had the exact same solve. Not sure I would have ever figured out Purple.
They’re only synonyms to people who don’t know the difference between the two. I consider it unkosher for them to deliberately use the wrong one.
Thursday’s was a really tricky one for me. I suspect it won’t be for the rest of you who know things like food and fish, which I do not.

I got beaten by Wednesday. I started with the red herring, and then I noticed too many words that were car models, but not Fords, and then I’ve never heard of a kidney pool.
Yeah, I had no issues with it, knowing both.

No problem
Once I got rid of some of the desserts.
Like Merriam-Webster?
Neither—these words are really just variants of each other. There is, however, a catch (there’s almost always a catch): one of these words is more commonly used as an adjective, and the other one is more commonly used as a verb. Staunch is more often found as an adjective (it has several meanings in this role, including “watertight,” “substantial,” and—most popular—“steadfast in loyalty or principle”). Stanch more often will be found used as a verb with meanings having to do with slowing or stopping the flow of something.

Synonyms of ‘stanch’
stem, stop, hold back, staunch
But even today, there’s a lot of crossover in their usage. In fact, modern dictionaries list each spelling as an acceptable variant of the other.
But, as The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (4th ed.) says in a Usage Note, “Staunch is more common than stanch as the spelling of the adjective. Stanch is more common than staunch as the spelling of the verb.”
In Britain we only have a Liverpool.

Reverse rainbow without even trying.
No reverse rainbow for me, had no idea which categories were supposed to be harder. Was like all four were yellow.
Saturday is here at last. Did okay, with only one misstep.
